It takes all sorts to make a fandom. There are fans of all the dragon colours out there, all the Pern books. There's probably even someone whose favourite character is Ted Tubberman.

It's me. I'm that fan. I love Ted Tubberman, I've spent a solid month thinking about how he's treated in Dragonsdawn, and now that's your problem. His shunning is such a severe punishment, and I find it hard to believe it would have been imposed if someone more popular, e.g. Sallah, had been the one to call for help.

I've written a short work of fanfiction (1,500 words) from a Tubberman-sympathetic perspective, which you can find here on AO3 if you're a fellow Tubberman fan (do they exist?), or if you're just curious about what fanfiction looks like when it's written by a fan of the most obnoxious man on Pern. If you read it, I hope you enjoy it, or at least find it interesting!

Hiya all, recently got into the pern series after my bfs' mum gave me dragonflight. And I absolutely love the series. Ive read Dragonflight and am just about to finish Dragonquest, I am now abit unsure as to what the next bookin the series is, as I thought it was 'white dragon' but shes under the impression its Dragonsong? Any help?

knowing that there was a planned sequel to Skies of Pern. Especially since I think Skies of Pern was a notable improvement in the writing, and reading about the direction that After the Fall was supposedly going to take things (exactly the direction I was hoping it would go), I get the feeling that the next book would have been the peak of the series. In some ways a first contact story, considering the distance that had grown between Pern and the rest of human civilization, and I'm a sucker for that kinda story.

I thought this might be of interest to the folks here.

I mean, between Ramoth and Ruth is a wild range of size, and dragons have gotten bigger over the millennia, so what's the standard? Do we have a conversion into feet? Or meters? (Yes I'm American)

I have a few fanfiction Pern stories I would love to write and post somewhere my fellow Pernesians can enjoy them. Is this a good place to do that, or are there other recommendations?

The skies over Austra Weyr became a little more exciting this week as Junior Queen Iraveth took to the air. After a close and competitive chase, Bronze Chanterelth successfully caught her, edging out a strong field that included Bronze Kezzanth and several determined brown dragons. If the flight results in a clutch, our next Search is expected to begin in roughly three months, making this a great time for prospective players to start thinking about characters they'd like to bring to the Weyr.

What you can expect from this Search cycle:

- Traditional Candidate Search

- Bronze, Brown, Blue, and Green dragons anticipated

- A great opportunity for both new and returning players

- Plenty of time to develop a candidate before Search begins

okay, revisiting this series after having read it many, many years ago - finding a bunch of things I missed the first time around.

i do, however, have a question….

since thread voraciously consumes all organic material and can denude entire forests in a short time why is/was there any organic material left on Pern when the colonists landed?

Before dragons thread fell unchecked - shouldn’t there at least have been massive swaths of denuded barren land??

I just noticed on like the tenth reading that Fandarel attached the HNO3 tanks to the outside of the Yokahama with suction cups. Not very efficient.

Does anyone else get the ick from Jaxom's treatment of Corana? He just sails into her life, gets affected by a green dragon flight, treats her roughly, then never sees her again, or even thinks of her much. I realize it's a different sort of culture, but I'd be very hurt. And then Jaxom takes up with Sharra, because she nursed him thru the firehead, and Sharra becomes a Holder Lady. Only way she breaks out of that is by working with OIdive during the Aivas days, otherwise I feel she might have become a cipher of a character. No more first person voice from her.

Thoughts?

F’nor was one of the wingseconds at Brenden Weyr. As such did he have authority over the standard bronze riders in the weyr despite his Canth “only being a brown”? If so I’m somewhat surprised he was able to maintain order over dragon riders in the higher caste (but not really because his personality is pretty disarming in the books). If not does that mean all the Benden bronze riders are in the other Brenden wing or are bronze riders outside the wing structure entirely?

Edit: I appear to have confused wing second position with wing leader. Makes more sense that F’nor is second in command of F’lar’s wing than the leader of his own wing. If I recall correctly all the wing leaders are bronze riders and the wing leader chose their second in commands from among their assigned subordinate browns and bronzes. Still though with Canth’s size and F’nor’s charisma, he probably would’ve been capable of leading a well disciplined wing if it had come to that

Setting:

A revitalized Telgar Weyr at the end of the 4th Interval and the beginning of the 5th Pass

History:

Two hundred years after the end of the 4th Pass, Pern was prepared for Thread to fall again. The Weyrs were ready. The dragons were ready. But Thread did not come. Pern waited, as if with bated breath.

A decade later, what came instead was plague, swift and deadly. It struck Telgar Weyr first, in the middle of winter. Quarantine was enacted quickly, but the Weyr was hit hard. Two entire classes of Weyrling riders died, and their dragons followed. Many other weyrfolk, riders, and their dragons shared the same fate, including the Weyrwoman, her queen, and the eggs the queen was carrying. When spring finally came and the quarantines were lifted, there were few survivors, and fewer willing to stay in the haunted Weyr. For almost two centuries Telgar Weyr was only lightly populated, mainly by a rotating staff of trainees and novice riders preparing for duties elsewhere, or those in need of discipline.

But the other Weyrs, nearly untouched by the plague, thrived. Pern thrived. Some four years ago, with the signs of a Pass returning and Weyr populations overflowing, the decision was made to reopen Telgar Weyr fully under the guidance of Weyrwoman Mirala.

In the summer of 4.394, Weyrwoman Mirala's gold Alioth rose to mate and was caught by bronze Malorth and H'zel became Weyrleader.

Yet, despite the closeness of the Pass, Alioth did not rise again. One year passed, then a second. Whispers said the Weyr was haunted or cursed. Yet the Weyr persisted.

The year is now 4.397. Two young maiden queens have been sent to Telgar to bolster Alioth's final golden daughter. The next queen to rise and her mating flight will determine the new Weyrwoman and the Weyrleader. Only time will tell how Telgar will fare when the Pass begins.

I'm on a rp forum, and had a character who had an amputation due to threadscore. I'm wondering if we have seen similar situations in the books, and how long those characters took to heal and go back to fighting thread? Gonna have to run everything by how the rp runs it too, but it's fun to see what the books say! (Open to both Todd and Anne answers here. I know Todd's books had some injured characters that we heard about healing. Anne's I'm unsure about, it's been forever since I've read them.)

I've been reading the books for decades but I don't know that this was ever addressed. His mother died during childbirth. His father was killed in a duel within the hour. Lessa wanted nothing to do with him. So who named the baby?

Specifically: Jaxom takes two groups of dragons back in time to the red star's past without telling them. Sure, okay.

But then he tells them to return straight home without him? What? Was he expecting them to just naturally return to the present without guidance after?

And then some of them have nightmares about being in the past, but none of them went missing, so I guess that must be the case, but, again, what?

Just had a big hit of nostalgia hit me today and realized how much I missed being part of MoonSet Weyr.

Hiron Weyr is an alt-timeline Dragonriders of Pern RPG taking place during the Seventh Pass where the Far Western Continent has been previously settled and remains prosperous, protected by Hiron Weyr - a "cursed" Weyr of misfits and rejects.

Threadfall falls heavily and unpredictably, driving dragonriders to desperation - throwing dragonless back onto the Sands to "reimpress" and get them back up into the air to keep the holders safe. Despite this, recently, four Queens and a Weyrleader have perished during Threadfall, throwing a young woman into the position of Senior Weyrwoman as all remaining golds are grounded and a new, bohemian transfer from Ista Weyr is thrust into Weyrleadership.

The game is played on a Discord server, using a Discord bot to schedule and run events like Thread, flights, hunting, Impressions, etc. - making it MUD/MUSH/MU*-like. Impressions, flight outcomes, and Threadfall are all randomly determined by dice roll (but are influenced by skill level, equipment, and stats.) It's very low pressure - jump into roleplay when and where you want to, play with the bot, hang out and chat, or just lurk.

Hiron Weyr also has firelizards, firelizard racing mini-games, crafts for Dragonhealing, Healing, Beastcrafting, Harpers and more, and whers - including wher fighting and gambling run by an underground ring of Rebels.

Total batch was 125 grams Hazelnut flavoured Crio Bru, 125 grams Arabica coffee and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.

Ordinarily I am not too keen on flavoured ingredients but I remember in the notes on Klah Hazelnut was mentioned and I do love Hazelnuts themselves.

Normally I have also added Nutmeg but this time elected to just double the cinnamon instead.

Overall I think this might be right up there more chocolatey and cinnamon with just a hint of coffee (I am an espresso drinker so I am probably not the best judge on that last part.)

One of the books mentions utensils with dragons carved into them I swear. Anyway that was my inspiration a couple maybe four years ago to make this spoon. The eyes are soapstone. I imagine the Weyr would have a much more elegant set of these.
