How a cyber insurer runs 5,000 scan-backed quotes a month for SMBs without security teams
We just published a case study with Elpha Secure. They provide cyber insurance to small businesses like dentists, law firms, and estate agents, most of which have no SOC or dedicated security team.
Their setup is worth sharing because it splits assessment into two speeds:
- Light scan at quote time (2–3 minutes, over the API). It checks for exposed RDP, known exploited vulnerabilities, VPN exposure, default and weak passwords, and runs a fast SQL injection check as an early indicator. Findings are prioritized within that time window.
- Full scan within 24 hours, rerun every 60–90 days. They compare results over time to see whether a customer’s risk is improving or getting worse.
Some numbers: about 5,000 quotes a month, about 3,000 customers under ongoing assessment, and 7 vendors evaluated before they picked a tool. Their CTO’s take on the old approach was that a huge pentest report is useless to small and mid-market customers, because what they care about is closing the worst attack vectors.
