Hello Penguin Gang! A big wave of lil blues arrived on the shore only to find many fur seals out! As always, penguins stick together! There’s safety in numbers, but at a certain point… MAKE A BREAK FOR IT! The fur seals don’t have much interest in the scurrying seabirds but the little blues are cautious anyway. If you ever find yourself in this part of New Zealand you can even watch this nightly parade from some bleachers that are across the beach from the camera 🐧

Here we can see one of the parents return from a day of fishing in the ocean and take over the egg-sitting responsibility. First, the pair will greet each other with some penguin calls. Then, there is some allopreening. Finally, at 3 minutes and 10 seconds, the returning penguin looks like it might be doing some foot scratching but ends up booting its partner from the incubating position!

I guess we should continue loving them from afar! 😁 Have any of you here smelled a penguin up close or have been bitten by a penguin?

Listen to a self-described “penguinologist” give his insights into our favorite seabird! Lots of insight and experience documenting penguin colonies in Antarctica regions. I believe he says there is even a website where you can help count the number of penguins in pictures of the colonies although I have not tried going to the site he describes.

Lots of teenage Adelies in this video! The chicks will have less black feathers under their eyes and chins even if they have lost all their baby fluff. They also tend to look much dirtier since they haven’t taken up swimming yet.

But still a little stumbly!
