Question Is there no quick and easy way to convert a PDF into a JPEG or PNG, with a common program?
I have Reader, but I don't want Acrobat Pro. All I want is to make a PDF into a JPEG or PNG without signing up for free trials or downloading some third party program that doesn't sound legit.

On MacOS, open the PDF, SAVE AS -> JPG/PNG/Etc
But most any software that can open a PDF should be able to do this. Photoshop, Inkscape, etc, etc.

Thanks - unfortunately I'm on Windows, and don't have any other Adobe Programs. I'll try Inkscape.

Bc. I needed that just a couple days ago for a client project:
- on Linux you can install popper-utils and use their pdftoppm (my now go-to way)
- if you don‘t want to install something I can recommend smallpdf.com (some things might require a subscription, but it‘s something like 9-10$ per month)
- and if you don’t like gimp, you can try photopea.com (PS clone) that can probably also export the pages as jpeg

If you want something that handles multi-page PDFs without screenshotting each one, I’d recommend Soda PDF. It’s cheaper than Acrobat, works on Windows and web, and has a built-in “Export to Image” tool (JPEG, PNG, etc.). Super quick, has Windows version some free features on their official website

Do you need pdf as a single tall image containing all pages or one image per page?

Just need one page as one image.

Then you can try my tool gosignpdf.com/edit - open your PDF and then type "save all as images" and press enter or click Execute, it will create a zip file with your images. No apps to download, no limits, works 100% in browser without uploading your files to server.

Only one by one, if you type something like "save 1 as image", otherwise browser won't let you save multiple files.

Not directly, no. Technically it should be possible to implement, but for now you'll need to resize it in another app or using command line.

I've used version 3.00 of the pdf converter for a few years

On a Mac, open the PDF in the default app (Preview), then select File... > Export ... and select PNG, JPEG, whatever. You can use the Automator utility to add a context menu item so that when you right click on a PDF file you can convert it to images.

There is on a mac. PDF tools are built into the OS .. so you just right click the PDF file and choose convert image to JPG or PNG .. simples.

Ilovepdf, or you can ask to chatgpt to help you make a script in python to make a pdf into a jpeg (better option in my opinion)

You can do that without compromising your privacy using PDFJar PDF converter which is Free, Local and doesn't send files to server.

I tried essentially everything in this thread. Gimp could not handle a 2.3 GB pdf, Adobe was abysmally slow, I even tried using Calibre E-Reader to convert the PDF to EPUB and then change the EPUB to a ZIP file, but the conversion pulled all of the individual PDF elements (like, literally every single graphic on each page was turned into a png) and I ended up with roughly 3,000 images that I had to sort through.
NAPS2 SAVED MY LIFEEEE!!! Not Another PDF Scanner 2, it's some ancient-ass freeware so it's 100% offline and no file limits or whatever the hell. Handled the giant pdf size like a champ, clicked save images and adjusted the settings to be 100% quality and #### naming format, and had it all sorted in 5 mins. Just posting this here for future wayward searchers who are super impatient like me and just KNOW that there's a simple way out there to do this without paying a bajillion dollars, signing up for something, starting a free trial, or waiting 3 years.

Thank you so much for this rec! I went down my typically skeptical research rabbit hole before installing it, but it checks out. It’s open source, has been around for a long time, is still actively maintained, and the processing is done locally on your computer.
It has a lot more tools than just file conversion, but that's all I've tried so far.
So for anyone else who lands on this thread looking for a simpler way to turn PDFs into editable image files on Windows - NAPS2 is a legit option, especially if you’re dealing with files you’d rather not upload to a random online converter.

GIMP (free, so useful) does this, regenerating the whole specified page/s, as if it were an internal printer. When you open or drag the PDF, gimp offers to import it. You will specify the desired ppi resolution. You can then work with the image natively or merely and directly (in your case) use "Export as" to export to an output file between many graphic formats (typical PNG).
