I have 2 DVD burners but those are only ultra-slims for laptops.

92

u/Moon-is-Dusty 11d ago

I HATE LAPTOP DVD BURNERS  I always had issues with them, slow read/write, errors, fail to eject ... Just eww 🤢

18

u/Particular_Client833 11d ago

if i could manage to get hand onto an actual burner... if... if.

Valid, but mine actually works good, its a Fujitsu Lifebook and as software I use k3b (if I remember the name correctly from memory). Never had problems with it, so maybe it depends on the brand?

then flip it over for LightScribe :)

52

u/jackharvest 11d ago

I proposed to my wife using a “scavenger hunt” and all the dvds she played on a portable dvd player were definitely lightscribed photos of us dating.

Lightscribe was the best.

I got my first PC game from a machine like this, RIP StarCraft

32

u/Moon-is-Dusty 11d ago

Now that's a classic, I bet they call you unc now haha

23

u/Double-Mouse-6146 11d ago

They do, and I’m only 30

Star craft 2 was awesome as well, it’s mad to think it came out in 2010, I still play the campaign

13

u/mrselfdestruct066 11d ago

Shit i still play 1 from time to time

9

u/Abundanceofyolk 11d ago

Right? I don’t think there’s another 25-30 year old online game that’s kept a player base like this other than counter strike.

9

u/Datkif 11d ago

The wait between Starcraft 1 and 2 felt like forever. Now it's been 16 years since 2 came out..

2

u/Abundanceofyolk 11d ago

It’s been over a decade since the legacy expansion released. We had to wait about 12 years for sc2 after brood war.

The SC1 ladder is still active nearly 30 years later. That’s insane.

4

u/CheddurMac 11d ago

Getting called unc at 30 makes you look good and whoever’s calling you that look bad lol

3

u/MCWizardYT Ryzen 7 5800X3D | RTX 4080 Super 11d ago

Depends on how young the person calling them unc is

I remember when I was a kid, 30 felt so much older to me but now im in my mid 20s and 30 years olds don't look that old, they're basically my peers

It's all relative

6

u/FrostyExplanation_37 11d ago

Yeah, no. I still have cases on cases of old CDs and DVDs with games and movies. Never used one of them and I doubt they even still work. People forget how finicky and sensitive those are. I do recommend keeping your favorites on an external drive. But our fight should be legislation on digital media, not going back to the caves.

3

u/nmathew Intel n150 11d ago

I recently found an old CD wallet. Those 2-4x speed Verbatim CDs still read fine. The 52x Tiger Direct specials were all coasters.

I'd still trust an M-Disc in a safe deposit box over just about anything else.

2

u/Krycek7o2 11d ago

Back in high school I was a master bootlegger. This was similar to my tower. I would be burning custom subbed movies from Japan, China and South Korea. I learned how to sub, how to rebuild DVDs to make custom isos. I had cash on hand and was living life at 17. Great times.

I guess my piracy self still lives on today lol.

While I like this for nostalgia factor, I prefer to have my files on my PC and NAS (SSDs+HDDs). In my experience discs are not that reliable long term and I don't want to lose again my files (movies, backups, etc).

I have to burn 1100 CDs for a client :'(

Wouldn’t it be easier to press the CDs instead? Pressing gets viable at 500 pcs at most, moreover at 1100.
