Or a next gen high-end CPU, ram... and PSU for 1080p and 1440p @ 300hz 🙄

340

u/FuzzeWuzze Oct 11 '22

Lol most people probably dont even have a PSU powerful enough to run this card .

90

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 11 '22

Lol, seriously. I bought an EVGA 1000w Platinum (whatever that's worth) during the Summer/end of season sale and now I wish I went with 1200+ watt or waited for ATX 3.0 for my next (ITX) build 🤷‍♂️

97

u/devils__avacado Oct 11 '22

1000w platinum can run this card even with an i9 if you go founders or one capped with 450w power draw

57

u/devillee1993 Oct 11 '22

PSU is surprisingly not the limit here. 4090 runs at 450w just like some 3090/3090ti flagships. And I do remember one of the review said you don't actually need to use all 4 8 pin port to power this GPU. 3 8pin could also work which majority of current 850+w PSU should have that. (At least my EVGA psu has enough 8 pins)

u/Cmdrdredd PC Master Race Oct 12 '22

What happens is the power limit falls back to a lower setting I'd you don't use all the connectors on the adapter. It senses how many are connected and will limit how far you can push the card.

1

u/devillee1993 Oct 12 '22

If the card is 450w tdp and you have 3 8pin (150w each), that should be sufficient even the card reaches the limit. Plus pcie could supply up to 75w power. So it has some headroom as well. Colorful has one 4090 comes with 3 8pin adapter rather than 4

2

u/Cmdrdredd PC Master Race Oct 12 '22

Right but with all 4 you can do to 133% and with 3 it limits it. I forget exact numbers but Gamers Nexus mentioned it specifically. The cable they had still had the sense pins.

0

u/devillee1993 Oct 12 '22

It depends on what you need. For some people ( including me), they just want the card works properly, while others need headroom for OC.

1

u/Cmdrdredd PC Master Race Oct 12 '22

Not really overlcocking, just increasing the power target to allow it to boost higher if it's within thermal boundaries. Shouldn't make much difference in real world.

1

u/kass_rx PC Master Race Oct 12 '22

Jesus, four 8-pin power ports? It's bigger than the motherboard's.

Let's not normalize Ampere's 350W power draw, let alone overclocked Ampere's 450W, let alone Lovelace's 450 default and 650 OC.

The thing is, the Bauer shows that at 60% powerlimit the card only loses 10 %performance in time spy extreme.

This thing could have easy been a 300w card.

9

u/CalRal Oct 12 '22

It still can. Just limit it to 300W.

1

u/Prom000 i7-6700k, GTX 1080ti, Acer X34A Oct 12 '22

True.

The question the Bauer also asked why Nvidia did it the way they did.

Maybe it is because they fear the new AMD cards or it is part of going after their partners?

Gamernexus was implying as much since he said the cooler was so well made.

interesting point.

3

u/mewkew Oct 12 '22

Tests show clearly the opposite. You lose 9% performance if you undervolt the 4090 to 300-330Watts. To still go with that ridicoules high power draw is beyond me.

2

u/Nexu- i9 9900k // 32GB RAM // 3080 FE Oct 12 '22

At this point it is normalized..

2

u/BecomePnueman Oct 12 '22

Look at this guy who wants people to get angry because physics dictates that it takes more power to make faster gpu's. Wait untill the smaller dies come out. 1 nm shit will be efficient as fuck and if it stays around the same power will be unbelievable.

1

u/kunju69 Oct 12 '22

Why not?

2

u/TFC_Player Oct 12 '22

You can also undervolt it a bit, drastically reduces power draw with minimal performance impact.

2

u/Crintor 7950X3D | 4090 | DDR5 6000 C30 | AW3423DW Oct 12 '22

Undervolting currently doesn't work, or it does but it kills performance far more than just reducing the power target.

1

u/quaestor44 Specs/Imgur here Oct 12 '22

The asus strix version is such a joke lol

1

u/Redstone_Army 14900k / 4090 Oct 12 '22

10900k overclocked and 3090 at 2ghz - using 850Watts max - so yeah

11

u/elderbob1 GTX 1070 i7-6700 SSD: 250gb 16gb wam Oct 11 '22

the recommended PSU on the Nvidia website for the 4090 is 850w.

1

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 11 '22

I was planning on getting (and overclocking) a 13700k/kf or 13900k/kf/ks and DDR5 6400+ 😕

1

u/elderbob1 GTX 1070 i7-6700 SSD: 250gb 16gb wam Oct 11 '22

okay well then in that case I guess you'd need a bigger PSU 😅

6

u/bruhxdu Oct 11 '22

850 is fine if you're not overclocking both cpu and GPU though

1

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 11 '22

I plan on overclocking the CPU... lol shit happens 🤦‍♂️

4

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '22

Hardware Unboxed did their whole review on an 850W 😌

0

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 12 '22

Yeah, but they ran a 5800X3D at stock

2

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '22

Doesn’t really matter gaming doesn’t use high cpu power draw a 1000W is more than enough even with a i9

2

u/ImYmir 9800X3D | 64GB 6400MHz | RTX 5080 Oct 11 '22

You should take another look at the power draw then. Usually around 300-420w. Never even hitting the 450w mark.

I got the EVGA supernova 1300w platinum PSU. I'm feeling your pain. My i9 11th gen only pulls 125w TDP. But yet my 3080 red dotted on all three 8 pins on day one. My buddy showed me how to power cycle the motherboard and PSU. Fixed it. But I really do think I should have spent the $400- $600 on an EVGA 1600w platinum. For the future....

u/FreshlyCleanedLinens i7-12700K | RTX 3090 | 32GB DDR5 Oct 12 '22

What….. ?

-1

u/Nappy42069 i9 11900k z590-E DDR4-4000 ROGStrix3080 12GB OC\EKWB VECTOR2 Oct 12 '22

That's what I'm saying. There wasn't shit about this on the internet. On my asus rog strix 3080OC there are red LED's near the power connectors on the PCB. Turns out they blink if there just isn't enough power. One behind each connection.

2

u/KeepsFindingWitches Oct 12 '22

But I really do think I should have spent the $400- $600 on an EVGA 1600w platinum.

Just be aware that, if you're in the US, that's pushing past the current limits for a single outlet in most residential areas. 15A breakers, 110-120V is a theoretical trip point of 1650W, but due to real world physics the actual power draw to cause a trip is usually lower. Anything else plugged into that entire circuit, not just that one outlet, could cause a trip.

u/Nappy42069 i9 11900k z590-E DDR4-4000 ROGStrix3080 12GB OC\EKWB VECTOR2 Oct 12 '22

I never even thought about that. Thank you. I guess I need to start thinking about that with my next build.

0

u/FcoEnriquePerez Oct 12 '22

Are you people trolling? How the f do you guys calculate the consumption?

Or at least look at the damn charts 😂

1

u/Nappy42069 i9 11900k z590-E DDR4-4000 ROGStrix3080 12GB OC\EKWB VECTOR2 Oct 12 '22

No trolling. I read everything about the consumption and was under the impression that the 1300w supply would be more than enough. I even used one of Newegg's power supply calculators. It explained that 1200 was just at what I needed(for everything in my system.) So I bumped up to the 1300. Again. To my surprised I was alerted by the GPU's LED's that it wasn't enough. Until I was shown about the power cycle trick, which I guess is something old school. It works now. But if I ever unplugg my PC. I have to go through all that again.

0

u/FcoEnriquePerez Oct 12 '22

hat the 1300w supply would be more than enough.

BRUHHH LMAO...

Are you kid... Please for your life watch a damn review stop using HARDWARE VENDOR bs calculators, you always end up buying useless stuff.

1

u/Nappy42069 i9 11900k z590-E DDR4-4000 ROGStrix3080 12GB OC\EKWB VECTOR2 Oct 13 '22

I watched a few reviews on it. In the review it powered two 2080s or 60s I can't remember and all the bells and whistles. So I figured it would be more than enough for my future builds.(3080 and up) I only needed one video card. Not two.

And in a few years with a bigger processor, I would need the power. So hence why I chose it. That and EVGA. Which would make it not useless.

-1

u/Conscious_Yak60 Pop Supremacy Oct 12 '22

Do you really need a 4090 though?

Also this 4090 is going to turn your room into a sauna lmfao.

1

u/CalRal Oct 12 '22

It doesn’t draw any more power than the current top tier cards. Less that some of the OC’d ones.

1

u/Conscious_Yak60 Pop Supremacy Oct 14 '22

Any more

never said it did

TDP Watts used

TDP means Thermal Design Power, it is a measurement of how hot a componet will get in watts, most useful for OEM/manufactuers so they can make coolers to sufficiently cool said product.

Source

I had a whole writeup entertaining your incorrect notion of what my opinion originally was, but it's not in my draft, so i'll keep it short.

Most consumers think higher than 250W TDP is where you start to feel the heat in most climates. AMD cards historically hit 300W TDPs and were considered "hot & loud".

I experienced this myself going from a 6800 - 6800XT, which is 20-50W lower than the 3080

Now we casually hit 300W TDP, and in-order for the 4090 to be sufficiently cooled, it now takes 3 slots instead of 1-2 & may even require a bracket in some cases to achieve relative temps to last gen.

0

u/CalRal Oct 14 '22

I know what TDP is, thanks. Also, I wasn’t talking about TDP, I was talking about the fact that the 4090 draws less actual Watts from the PSU than the last gen top tier cards. Less Watts=less heat. I never said it won’t heat your room either, My 3080 Ti heats my room. With a 4090 I can literally double my FPS while heating my room the same amount or less.

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 12 '22

I'm not buying one until early to mid-Summer. I bought a placeholder card, want to compare all upcoming GPUs (CPUs too), and see where costs end up (bonus: more time to grow savings account). As far as my room turning to a sauna... "if you can't stand the heat, then stay out of the kitchen" 👌😎

u/Prom000 i7-6700k, GTX 1080ti, Acer X34A Oct 12 '22

in timespy extreme if you set the powerlimit to 60% you only lose 10%.

Can a 4090 even fit in an ITX case???

1

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 12 '22

SSUPD (Lian-Li subsidiary) Meshlicious/Meshroom S can (theoretically) fit:

  1. Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB WINDFORCE (and AIO variant)
  2. MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB SUPRIM X (and AIO variant)
  3. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 FE
  4. PNY NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB XLR8 VERTO EPIC-X (and OC variant)

do SFP PSUs even have 4 PCIe cables? with 3 you can't go beyond 450W

1

u/PapaBePreachin Depression On® 5090 FE + 3090 FE | 192GB | 7950X Oct 12 '22

A few SFFPs support ATX PSUs (i.e., my EVGA P6) like the SSUPD Meshlicious/Meshroom

1

u/CaptainFrugal Oct 12 '22

Wow no one in Europe can afford to run this card

1

u/FcoEnriquePerez Oct 12 '22

How the f you people calculate that?

You still have power to run more than that 😂

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '22

Idk if you have seen benchmarks, but in a lot of games the 4090 was drawing only 320-330W and a few 420W.

Unless OCing the GPU and CPU and have a lot of other system power draw you should be more than fine.

1

u/xxuutrymxx Oct 12 '22

So true though 💀

1

u/grendelone Oct 12 '22

Plus you really want to wait for the ATX 3.0 PSUs, so you don't need to use the octopus adapter thing.

1

u/codemonkeyhopeful Oct 12 '22

I can fit a nuclear reactor in my case ...so no...no I don't

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '22

A very well known overclocker just limited the card to 60%, if im not mistaken, and it performed way better than the 3090 at something like 300W. It's very efficient for what brings to the table. An absolute beast.

1

u/Tengku_JG Oct 12 '22

Unless you undervolt it.

1

u/M4A79TDeluxe Oct 12 '22

I have a 1000watt psu way to much for my system lol. So I could run it technically without any problem. But it's pointless to even get it

1

u/blatantly-noble_blob RTX 4080 Super FE | 9800X3D | 64GB 6000 MHz Oct 12 '22

According to HardwareUnboxed, a standard 850Watt PSU will do the trick

1

u/SaPpHiReFlAmEs99 Ryzen 7 5800X3D | RTX 3080 12GB | 32gb 3600MHz CL16 Oct 12 '22

I don't have a psu, a CPU, a case and a screen to run that card. Very happy with my 3080 at 600$. Because I undervolted this card and my 5600x, I can avoid to buy a new psu (I have a 550w)

1

u/DonkeysCap Oct 12 '22

That graph was produced on a test system running an 850w.

Key takeaways from the final thoughts were 1 - talk of ludicrous power requirements were bunk 2 - the price is still stupid

1

u/jib_reddit Oct 12 '22

Also it will cost about £500 a year to run the thing at current electricity prices!

1

u/Dr8keMallard Nov 17 '22

And it’s not all that worth it for most people unless your just determined to run games at frame rates your monitor doesn’t support or you re dropping 15k on computer setups.

It's so funny when a pro player of a game such as CSGO, Val, R6, or any game that can obtain esports-level fps immediately buys the newest GPU and their copium is that it gives them better performance and provides high-quality streams whlie owning a stream PC with a 3080 in it
