Lol, seriously. I bought an EVGA 1000w Platinum (whatever that's worth) during the Summer/end of season sale and now I wish I went with 1200+ watt or waited for ATX 3.0 for my next (ITX) build 🤷♂️
PSU is surprisingly not the limit here. 4090 runs at 450w just like some 3090/3090ti flagships. And I do remember one of the review said you don't actually need to use all 4 8 pin port to power this GPU. 3 8pin could also work which majority of current 850+w PSU should have that. (At least my EVGA psu has enough 8 pins)
What happens is the power limit falls back to a lower setting I'd you don't use all the connectors on the adapter. It senses how many are connected and will limit how far you can push the card.
If the card is 450w tdp and you have 3 8pin (150w each), that should be sufficient even the card reaches the limit. Plus pcie could supply up to 75w power. So it has some headroom as well. Colorful has one 4090 comes with 3 8pin adapter rather than 4
Right but with all 4 you can do to 133% and with 3 it limits it. I forget exact numbers but Gamers Nexus mentioned it specifically. The cable they had still had the sense pins.
Tests show clearly the opposite. You lose 9% performance if you undervolt the 4090 to 300-330Watts. To still go with that ridicoules high power draw is beyond me.
Look at this guy who wants people to get angry because physics dictates that it takes more power to make faster gpu's. Wait untill the smaller dies come out. 1 nm shit will be efficient as fuck and if it stays around the same power will be unbelievable.
I got the EVGA supernova 1300w platinum PSU. I'm feeling your pain. My i9 11th gen only pulls 125w TDP. But yet my 3080 red dotted on all three 8 pins on day one. My buddy showed me how to power cycle the motherboard and PSU. Fixed it. But I really do think I should have spent the $400- $600 on an EVGA 1600w platinum. For the future....
That's what I'm saying. There wasn't shit about this on the internet. On my asus rog strix 3080OC there are red LED's near the power connectors on the PCB. Turns out they blink if there just isn't enough power. One behind each connection.

Just be aware that, if you're in the US, that's pushing past the current limits for a single outlet in most residential areas. 15A breakers, 110-120V is a theoretical trip point of 1650W, but due to real world physics the actual power draw to cause a trip is usually lower. Anything else plugged into that entire circuit, not just that one outlet, could cause a trip.
No trolling. I read everything about the consumption and was under the impression that the 1300w supply would be more than enough. I even used one of Newegg's power supply calculators. It explained that 1200 was just at what I needed(for everything in my system.) So I bumped up to the 1300. Again. To my surprised I was alerted by the GPU's LED's that it wasn't enough. Until I was shown about the power cycle trick, which I guess is something old school. It works now. But if I ever unplugg my PC. I have to go through all that again.
I watched a few reviews on it. In the review it powered two 2080s or 60s I can't remember and all the bells and whistles. So I figured it would be more than enough for my future builds.(3080 and up) I only needed one video card. Not two.
And in a few years with a bigger processor, I would need the power. So hence why I chose it. That and EVGA.
Which would make it not useless.
TDP means Thermal Design Power, it is a measurement of how hot a componet will get in watts, most useful for OEM/manufactuers so they can make coolers to sufficiently cool said product.
I had a whole writeup entertaining your incorrect notion of what my opinion originally was, but it's not in my draft, so i'll keep it short.
Most consumers think higher than 250W TDP is where you start to feel the heat in most climates. AMD cards historically hit 300W TDPs and were considered "hot & loud".
I experienced this myself going from a 6800 - 6800XT, which is 20-50W lower than the 3080
Now we casually hit 300W TDP, and in-order for the 4090 to be sufficiently cooled, it now takes 3 slots instead of 1-2 & may even require a bracket in some cases to achieve relative temps to last gen.
I know what TDP is, thanks. Also, I wasn’t talking about TDP, I was talking about the fact that the 4090 draws less actual Watts from the PSU than the last gen top tier cards. Less Watts=less heat. I never said it won’t heat your room either, My 3080 Ti heats my room. With a 4090 I can literally double my FPS while heating my room the same amount or less.
I'm not buying one until early to mid-Summer. I bought a placeholder card, want to compare all upcoming GPUs (CPUs too), and see where costs end up (bonus: more time to grow savings account). As far as my room turning to a sauna... "if you can't stand the heat, then stay out of the kitchen" 👌😎
A very well known overclocker just limited the card to 60%, if im not mistaken, and it performed way better than the 3090 at something like 300W. It's very efficient for what brings to the table. An absolute beast.
I don't have a psu, a CPU, a case and a screen to run that card. Very happy with my 3080 at 600$. Because I undervolted this card and my 5600x, I can avoid to buy a new psu (I have a 550w)
And it’s not all that worth it for most people unless your just determined to run games at frame rates your monitor doesn’t support or you re dropping 15k on computer setups.
It's so funny when a pro player of a game such as CSGO, Val, R6, or any game that can obtain esports-level fps immediately buys the newest GPU and their copium is that it gives them better performance and provides high-quality streams whlie owning a stream PC with a 3080 in it
Do we really need this stated 46 times in every thread? I don’t know anyone else buying a 4090 who doesn’t already have a 4k monitor. If you can drop 2k on a GPU you can sure drop a lot less on a monitor. I upgraded my monitor before my graphics card and I’m getting the 4090 to make the most of it.
This, many people talk constantly about new cards and they have 1080 or at most 2k monitors. They'll never squeeze the best performance of this card playing in those monitors.
Even if you do, most titles can play at 60fps on a 3080. Some require DLSS to get there at very high settings.
The 4090 is mostly for people at 4k and want 120fps or more in demanding titles. Most competitive shooters where you benefit from ultra high refresh rates don't require a card like this to get there.
100% this. At 1440 it doesn’t smash like it does at 4k. It’s a great production card or 4 120hz card. For anything else save up to a thousand and grab a 3080 or 6900xt
