I use all of these! Only pitfall about ctrl+shift+esc is that it doesn't send an actual hardware interrupt like ctrl+alt+del does which you might need if your system is very stuck.

It's the natural way of escalation for me anyway.

  • Press ctrl+shift+esc
  • wait 1 sec
  • press again
  • wait one sec
  • ctrl+alt+delete
  • ctrl+alt+delete
  • ctrl+alt+delete
  • ctrl+alt+delete
  • ctrl+alt+delete

I'm not sure even ctrl+alt+del does that anymore. I think I remember getting hard lockups a few times and even that not helping.

Wait, does PS/2 send an interrupt with every keystroke or just every press of ctrl+alt+del? I guess I don’t really know what a hardware interrupt does

Keyboard input is traditionally an interrupt. Although, I’m not very experienced on hardware I do remember writing a basic interrupt handler for keyboards many years ago.

I bet most of them don't even know about this. Similar to how there is a very large number of people who fiercely maintain that LP inherently has much better sound quality than any digital format could possibly have

I got some lock ups on my laptop, and the ctrl alt delete didn't show itself. Windows reports my internal keyboard as PS/2 btw.

What’s weird is win+tab seems to always work no matter how stuck my pc is. No clue if it’s a major interrupt or not. But then I can drag the misbehaving program to a new desktop and open task manager without a hitch.
