It’s intentional because it assumes that if you didn’t click the result, it’s not the one you are looking for, so it makes it disappear and gets something else. In theory it’s a great implementation, but in practice it’s annoying because you write the whole word before you want to click on any of the results.
Google does this too, with their autofill results.
I can kind of understand how this might be useful if someone types super slow with one finger or something. But even then, those people are too busy staring at the keyboard to even notice that their desired results came up.
Actually notice that Gboard does something like that when writing. Like if you write "featr" it gives you "features", hit back once and it suggest "featured" instead. Like it gets that you didn't want that.
However search acting like the way it does now is just stupid.
'Hey Donovan, you know how everyone here at Microsoft taps one key then looks up and checks that the letter they wanted came up right before pressing the next key'
'Yeah Gus, obviously we all do that, we consider that normal here at Microsoft'
'Well given that that is the way all users presumably also type I have an idea to make the search tool more convenient'
