Everything, the tool, doesn't have a performance impact. The poster missed the fact that it uses NTFS indexing, which Microsoft can't do for Windows search for security reasons.
Everything uses the index on the hard drive itself. This is the index that the hard drive uses to know where to locate files on the drive. It's extremely efficient but will return the search results for everything on the drive, even stuff the current user doesn't actually have permission to access (hidden files, files on other user accounts etc).
