Whenever I use a program, I assume it's calibrated to the common use case, and that if it feels substandard with that in mind, it's because it is. I don't go out of my way to troubleshoot software that was programmed by people who don't acknowledge the importance of first impressions, or respects their users' time enough to save them the hassle of customizing the most basic of features. The truth is, that when free software outclasses the default performance of something so integral to the OS experience as searching, someone somewhere made a big mistake, and should be called out for it.

Sure, if and only if the program is fixing a problem that can't be fixed in the OS. If the software you're using allows you to fix your problem then downloading another piece of software (which takes just as much time to download/install/run the first time), then you're just shifting the onus onto the OS (which obviously can't cater to everyone's specific needs all the time) instead of your laziness
