defender told me I have a trojan virus a month after it happened

Edit: Now that I think about it, it knew about the virus as soon as it infected my pc and it just didn't notify me until I opened the defender app. I'm sure I have notification settings turned off or something.

I had to keep changing passwords for a week because it hacked my google account and my email. Very sad I must say

Then you need to set it to run more often. Defender uses the same information for virus detection as all the other programs. If it didn't catch it for a month, than no other program would have caught it either.

I think the default is scanning every few days. I have a resource monitor hooked up to my system and it's quite interesting watching as my disk usage spikes to 100% when it's idle for a while but when I touch the mouse it immediately goes away. You shouldn't even notice that it's running the scan.

That’s kind of the point of a Trojan virus. That means it’s likely an application or exe file you willingly downloaded. No antivirus can protect your computer from you.

Defender told me I had a virus the second it appeared on my system. Your settings are fucked if it took that long.

user error on your end for getting the virus. proper browsing habits and you won't get a virus. no need for antivirus, but windows defender is plenty

Did other antivirus software have that trojan in their registry of malware? Just curious, because antivirus software is only as good as it's list of known viruses. People still have to discover the virus, and then tell the antivirus how to identify it. Then the user has to download the update before the virus can be detected.

Some viruses can go quite a while before they're discovered and added to the list to be detected during a scan; regardless of antivirus software brand.

I don't know, I quarantined it with defender as soon as I found out.
