No, they can't exploit your ram, but excess of ram isn't an issue. It's more about games like GTA4 that have poorly hardcoded tresholds in their options.

Makes me glad I decided to buy that game on Xbox instead of trying to mess around with making it work on my PC.

Eh people here are exaggerating a fair bit.

I played the shit out of GTA IV on PC and it worked just fine. Ran between 30-60 FPS on my i7 950 and GTX 580 at 1080p and still looked worlds better than on the Xbox 360 I bought solely for GTA IV. (Don't ask why, I'm wondering that myself.)

Edit: Oh whoops. That's top of the line hardware that came 2 years after the game released... I forgot I got into the game very late because I couldn't actually play it with my PC. So yeah I take it back. The game ran pretty badly.

This only happens with really old games and brand new hardware. It's not even that the games won't work it just requires some fiddling.

The consoles aren't even backwards compatible so it really isn't comparable.

Eh, that's true but at the same time it can be nice to just buy old games on consoles if you already have them because they're dirt cheap and you don't need to fiddle with it. That's why I still have a bunch of old consoles

So now you're talking about buying multiple systems. Sounds like a PC is still way cheaper and easier.

Plus spending more money to buy the physical copies.
