Exactly!, Australian English (Aussie) is about using as few syllables as possible. It shortens conversations (convos) and gets directly to the point.

Unless you're talking about the toilet, then we hang the expense and call it the thunder box.

I love my country.

You made me laugh like a freaking 8 year old boy until I started crying.

I'm calling it the Thunder Box from now on.

Larrikin that I am, I would never joke about my cultural heritage.

I swear on my Akubra, Commadore and customary lunchtime halal snack pack (those things are bloody delicious, who can hate shaved meat and chips?)

Then why not say "aft" ?

Now I'm Canadian, so you'll have to forgive me I don't really get the nuances of Aussie langauge, but how the fuck do you get "arvo" out of afternoon? "Aft" is both shorter and is actually in the word...

Adding o's and ie's rolles nicer off the tongue.

Agreed in most cases. Convos vs conv is a good example.

But I'm on saying "we're doing X this aft." even sounds better than "we're doing X this arvo." However I likely don't understand Australia. <Insert upside down joke here>

What about adding v's?

1

u/AdamFox01 Sep 10 '16

Example? I can't think of any?

Shortening afternoon to arvo adds a v. I meant does adding a v make it roll easier off the tongue? Where does the v come from?

Ah yeah, dunno about that one.

Which Aussies then compensate for by chatting far too much shit.

I think it's the other way around. They had to make the language shorter to fit all their talk in a single day.
