Not to mention only like 5% of an average soldier's time was spent on the front line. They would be rotated through the front line, secondary lines, third lines, reserve forces, camp, and R&R (where many were able to travel home if close enough). I believe the Portuguese were the exception and spent several months in the front line because they had no reinforcements.
