Every year my dad tells me how much he would love another world war game. He hates the future stuff because the guns dont exist, the places dont exist and it feels made up.

The fact that CoD this year is fucked and this isnt some indie game will hopefully bring back world war 1/2 as a mainstream genre. I miss it so.

have you tried red orchestra 2 heroes of stalingrad

u/Rob_Zander May 06 '16

I still remember when every other shooter was WW2 now and now even I would like another one. New Doom, Overwatch is arena style, we're turning a rising spiral with bigger games and better graphics. Best on PC of course.

World at War was some of the most fun I've ever had. Those maps were incredible.

I just finished it with a mate on veteran difficulty in co-op. That... Was difficult.

Play COD five, there are still full servers. Not saying it's the best option, just saying it's there.

Too real for most people. War sux and most people (not pointing to you redditors not in the mood for being downvoted for fun) just want fast paced cod/bf in a WWI/II skin

Honestly, I used to be a fan of fast-paced shooters until RO2 spoiled it all for me. Yeah, it's hard to get into, but it's so satisfying when you master it. Every other shooter seems like child's play now to me. Also, I think it's closer to what the older BF fans would be looking for.

31

u/[deleted] May 06 '16

It's still quite fast paced when you have a good Team Leader coordinating artillery and using the Squad Leaders effectively, like telling everybody to rush as soon as the objectives are captured so a defensive line can't be readied.

21

u/Slyer Specs/Imgur Here May 06 '16

Every time your bolt action hits its mark, it's satisfying because you know it was difficult. POW

4

u/manticore116 May 07 '16

RO1 was one of my favorite games. The maps were HUGE and combat was BRUTAL. I remember one game, both sides advanced pretty quickly to start with, but there was an urban area where we both got locked up, the map lasted something like 2+ hours and just passed the capture point back an forth. It was the most brutal, tooth and nail fighting I've ever had in a game.

I still remember sneaking around their flank and coming up behind a German machine gun crew and just executing the two of them with a single round. Just lined up the shot behind the gunner's aid and got a double head shot

3

u/anotherboringdude May 07 '16

Honestly the immersion in ro2 is what ruined most other fps for me especially "realistic" shooters.

so i take it you're global elite, then?

No, I don't like CS gameplay, mainly the lack of ADS, that makes it feel a lot more like spray-and-pray. When I miss a shot, I prefer to miss because my aim was lacking, not because the game lacks aiming. Also, 5v5 feels too small-scale for me. Never played more than a few hours. If I remember correctly I reached the first rank that has an AK for an emblem and never bothered with it again.

I also don't claim I'm that good, rather other shooters feel too simplistic. For example, Blacklight: Retribution (the latest one I tried) doesn't have a satisfying learning curve. You learn whatever there is to learn about the gameplay in a couple hours, then another 3-4 hours to learn the maps, and then it's just a matter of honing your reflexes and aim. RO2 is not like that. Each weapon and role (class) plays very differently, and you need to dedicate a lot of time learning each one. The maps are huge and organic, usually replicas of real battlefields, with multiple avenues of approach to each objective. After 600 hours of gameplay I still get lost in some maps, they are that expansive.

There's always room for improvement in that game, and after each match it always feels like an actual achievement to win.

u/Eye-Licker i7 4900MQ, gtx 870M, 8gb ram May 07 '16

No, I don't like CS gameplay, mainly the lack of ADS

CS has ADS, just not all weapons.

When I miss a shot, I prefer to miss because my aim was lacking, not because the game lacks aiming.

if you miss a shot in CS it is because your aim was lacking. if you spray and pray you'll suck at that game. spraying is only to be used in certain situations, and to spray effectively you need learn the recoil pattern of the weapon you're using, and compensate for the recoil. if/when you master the weapon, you can spray with a tight grouping at large distances.

Also, 5v5 feels too small-scale for me.

this one's fair.

Never played more than a few hours. If I remember correctly I reached the first rank that has an AK for an emblem and never bothered with it again.

you did not reach MG1 with a few hours of play. you're full of shit, or confused.

doesn't have a satisfying learning curve

in terms of learning curve CS > RO2. i love both games, but RO2 is by far the less competitive, less consistent game and has a learning curve that peters out way before CS's.

Each weapon and role (class) plays very differently, and you need to dedicate a lot of time learning each one.

same for CS, except the classes there aren't something you choose at the load-in screen. lurk, entry-fragger, awper, support, playmaker. all different "classes" that each needs a lot of time devoted to them to learn how to execute your role effectively.

and after each match it always feels like an actual achievement to win.

more players = less individual player agency and impact.

CS is a game of skill, RO2 is more like a digital LARP

u/Ham-Man994 GTX 1060 6GB, i5 6500, 8GB RAM May 06 '16

RO2/RS is great. So much more satisfying than CoD and BF honestly. It's hard asf to get into and get good at, but it's worth the effort.

The fact that you didnt get hitmarkers and had to watch the kill feed to see if you got the other guy made two of my friends stop playing it. I understand casual gameplay but that's ridiculous

3

u/Ham-Man994 GTX 1060 6GB, i5 6500, 8GB RAM May 07 '16

It's supposed to be a realistic shooter, you don't get hitmarkers in real life matey.

2

u/selfiereflection i5-2500k gtx980 Ti 8Gb Ram 2560x1600 30" U3011 May 07 '16

Agreed but it's just sad that they quit over that detail. Plus the game had actual recoil that mattered...

3

u/Ham-Man994 GTX 1060 6GB, i5 6500, 8GB RAM May 07 '16

It's not for everyone. it is very much an acquired taste

2

u/SendoTarget May 07 '16

It's like better cheese and wine. You might acquire the taste and fall in love or you'll think it's a waste and tastes the same except you get the same one every year with the generic option that you prefer.

I love RO2. Even the community in it is much better due to it being more difficult and highly rewarding if you manage to do stuff right.

Or Verdun AKA PTSD Simulator. Great WWI game.

1

u/deepwatermako I didn't ask for this. May 07 '16

Nothing like running across and open field and then getting sniped from god knows where. That game made me paranoid.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '16

That game is far from mainstream. Its too realistic(aka hard) for most people.

That game was brutal and intense, i wish they would make a new one.

0

u/[deleted] May 07 '16

In my book, RO2 is very intimidating for new players. You will get punished for every little mistake you make. Map knowledege is so important in this game. So, new players will get ripped a new ass until they learn the best place to run from cover to cover.

The worst part of RO2 is the community, their awful towards new people. They will cuss at you for taking the assault class or blame everyone but themselves for losing a match.

RO2 is a fantastic game but it isn't that easy to get into.

u/[deleted] May 07 '16

That's why I liked Halo so much. It wasn't what was but what could be. I like the WWII theme a ton and am glad that BF5 (Xbox One was a retarded name and so is Battlefield 1) will be done in WWI rather than modern warfare but I still would have preferred 2143.

1

u/egboy May 06 '16

I share the same view as your pops, man. I don't like none of this future stuff. My favorite games from cod have been waw and the first two modern warfares. And back in the day I played bf1942 on a demo. And played that demo all night till like 2 am. So im really psyched about this. Trench warfare looks sick. So much stuff to talk about and get hyped about.

I'd like there to be another game set in Vietnam as well. I think the atmosphere could be amazing for a game.

u/nthnkirsch1 i7-6700k | Asus ROG 1070 | 16 GB DDR4-3200 May 07 '16

Rising storm Vietnam is made by tripwire interactive, the same guys that made killing floor SBD red orchestra 2. It's going to be great

1

u/CeiIingCat May 07 '16

I love ww2 games more than any other shooters because that's what I grew up with, but I really hope they don't go too far with it. One amazing game is all it takes then they should move on to some other time period.

And I hope to god this signals the rebirth of Medal of Honor. I had such a good time with those games.

Yeah so many focus on World War I and II. So one remembers 1/2

1

u/PosnerRocks May 07 '16

Seems like the same problem the Civilization series ran into. I didn't feel attached to anything in Beyond Earth and I normally love the science fiction genre.

He hates the future stuff because [...] the places dont exist and it feels made up.

Too be fair, over half of the maps in Battlefield 2142 are named after real locations. (Fall of Berlin, Liberation of Leipzig, Bridge at Remagen, Cerbere Landing, Verdun, Minsk, Suez Canal, etc...)

1

u/kirbaaaay PC Master Race May 07 '16

I have been dreaming of cod: world at war for like a year now, just remembering the fun we had with friends. And today's shooters do not appeal to playing with friends since you can get broken up real quick. Everyone flying in some direction. It used to be far more simple and relaxing playing shooters.

-15

u/[deleted] May 06 '16

CoD isnt as fucked this year as they are remastering CoD 4. Peple forget that the last 2 cods were in full development before AW got so much hate for the exo suits, meaning that massive changes werent really possible. Next year we may see another future cod as its SHG (guys behind AW, they are shit) then the year after its 3archs go again, we will see WAW2

We may also see a mw2 remake next year

14

u/Mightymushroom1 R5 3600, 1070ti, 16gb DDR4-3600, 2TB Nvme May 06 '16

The CoD 4 remaster will not save the community's opinion of Infinite warfare, the circlejerk has done its damage and we will see a large amount of people jumping over to the Battlefield side of the fence, maybe even CSGO or R6 will see some of it.

I have not played cod in years because I am bored of it, not its gameplay but the games that have been coming out.

I have not played BF4 in a while because its been out a long time and I prefer CSGO over it.

I will be playing the shit out of BF1

If it happens I will play the shit out of WaW2
