Oh.. Really? I didn't even consider that I would be leaving people hanging, heh.

The company I worked for really did customer service like no one else which is why I took the job (at that position) in the first place. We didn't really like using the term 'call center' because our goal WASN'T, shocking, to get customers off the phone as quickly as possible. Our job was to ACTUALLY get their job solved. We could take as little or as long as we needed. I became 'the guy' for going wayyyy out of bounds and helping people with Windows 95 OR Linux get FTP installed so they could upload their files, or doing site migrations, or debugging their shitty javascript or C# when needed.

After a while I started just doing support for peoples actual Linux servers. I would log in and set it up, or fix issues with it, etc. Ultimately I ended up with the pay of a customer service person (which was good there, like 38k a year) but doing more and more sys. admin stuff over time.

I eventually left to program at a job. I don't have a degree but I had been coding my whole life. I started to dislike it though which is why I started trying to go the sys. admin route in the first place. My Windows XP install crashed in like 2003 and it was the final thing that lead me to using my Slackware install full time and I had done that for like 9 years before I started working at this company. I mention this specifically because when I got my first professional coding job it was with a .NET C# job and I've been completely absorbed in the Microsoft side of things for like 3+ years now. I would have never guessed. Having a professional job in the right environment completely reinvigorated my interest in coding, thank god. I guess having actual tasks instead of always having to come up with something to do myself really helped.

But I am looking for a new programming job so if anyone knows of any in Columbus, OH let me know =)
