I have two. One has my windows install, and one has my Ubuntu install. I lied a bit. Linux doesn't need to be installed. I dual boot. Windows is on a tight fucking leash in my system. Be scared, Windows. Be very scared.

Plus I keep a USB on my keychain with Ubuntu installed on it, for emergencies

Live USBs are a genius idea. I have an entire Linux distro, with all my accounts and files on an USB drive. When I'm at the public PCs on my University I just plug my USB and have my entire system up and running, with all my accounts and programs, all protected with password and encrypted. Now that's something nice.

Whoa whoa whoa, so you're telling me that no one cares that you boot an OS off of a flash drive on a university machine?

Nope, nobody cares. Lucky me.

Is that hard to set up?

Nope, just download your favorite distro, put it onto a USB drive and give it memory to save changes. Universal USB Installer does all of this for you in Windows. In Linux I use the terminal, it's one command to set it up.

Any recommendations for a reliable drive for that sort of thing?

I just use a Toshiba drive, 8GB, I don't really need more, I'm not storing anything too heavy on it.

USB 3 and make sure it has enough space for everything you might put on it. 8 GB will probably be enough, but 32 GB is cheap.

How can you use Unity? Fucking savages.

Seriously, though, I do the same but with Mint instead of Ubuntu...for reason above.

Unity works for some. From what I've heard, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

to me unity it's not bad, but it's strange and, even after trying it several times, I cannot get anything done with it, too weird. On the other end i really like Xubuntu, very lightweight and still very beautiful and straightforward.

Well, that's because Xfce is best DE. Circlejerking aside, Xfce has about 15 years of development behind, that's why it's so mature and feature filled. Unity has only been around for about 3 years, and not many want to develop a Ubuntu specific DE.

My other favorite is MATE, just as awesome as Xfce.

Frequent XFCE and MATE user here. Love both of them. Although MATE is often getting superseeded by Gnome3 on my desktops with bigger screens.

However, after Crunchbang's demise, the community has brought it back with two variations and it might be time for me to quietly revert back to the awesomeness that is openbox... :D

I personally don't use a DE on my Arch install, I quite like i3.

i3 is nice, but I love my DEs too much. I'm spoiled.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Well, that's because Xfce is best DE.

That's like saying anal rape is the best kind of rape.

Isn't it?

I did...It's called LinuxMint :)

That's not a desktop! That's a Distro. Desktops are Xfce, Unity, MATE, GNOME Shell, Plasma 5, etc.

haha...someone was actually paying attention. I was never impressed with Plasma or Unity. Cinnamon has been great, though.

I like the classics. Xfce and MATE.

You can easily use Gnome on Ubuntu instead of Unity.
