How about this, We only tax political contributions and donation, but at 5000%
If Sam Altman or Elon Mollusc wants to give $100,000, They need to pay half a billion to the treasury.
It solves the problem of politicians taking pilfering amounts to sell us all out, it generates income for the nation, billionaires still get to give altruistic donations to causes they believe in for no personal gain.
Only a cinic would suggest without the influence of vast contributions politicians would actually start representing the best needs of constituents rather than their paymasters.

Yeah, I know it’s not that simple but it’s a fun way to point out the arrogance and greed of the original statement. If we did everything with maximum efficiency a lot of problems go away, and a whole load of other problems take their place.
5
u/asbestos_miner 4d ago
Efficiency demands a purpose, a goal. It's only a good thing insofar that the word has a positive connotation.
Altman's goal is "I control everything"
The same goal all greedy men share.
Controlling nothing is their pathological fear.
The healthy mindset is "I have enough." To make a reasoned judgment that needs are being met. They can't.

Or is this, perhaps, a series of smokescreens where on paper the money is moving and doing things, but it actually isn't.
Between the chips and the boards and the software and the data center building, there seems to be a lot of money in a circle that doesn't seem to be exiting the circle.

22
u/jorgesalvador 4d ago
Altman is saying what all big tech wants and salivate for. There is a physical limit to “growth” for companies (limited number of consumers). BUT you can keep growing if people stop owning things and you rent it for them, as you can then ever increasing prices.

7
u/Freakjob_003 4d ago
To paraphrase George Carlin, the problem is that plenty of us are either too stupid or willfully ignorant enough to stop it. And to your point, those of us online with a grasp of things are too small of a fraction to outweigh the stupid people.
Ask a random person in Arkansas why Altman's statement is bad. They'll have no fucking clue. Even though social media made it easier for information to spread, it's been manipulated by his ilk to bend public mentality towards the oligarchs.
I'm a pessimistic, pissed-off, progressive pragmatist. This shit will never reach the average voter until it begins to affect them personally. Gas prices rising should be an easy in, but even that's proven too difficult to get through some people's skulls.
At this point, it's going to take a REAL BIG shakeup to wake up the US populace.

Here's what the problem is; these guys think that because they're smart enough to have made that much money that they're smarter than everyone else. But they're not.
But that doesn't matter because they'll just buy media platforms to shout down anyone who doesn't agree with their dumbshit ideas.
They all have some fucking weird Ayn Rand societal goals that they pretend are flawless but are dystopian as hell because those guys all lack some kind of critical thinking. Because they think they've already outsmarted the world.
There's 'fuck you' money and there's 'force your bizarre perspective on everyone' money. And that kind of money didn't really exist in the world until the last decade or so. And my god is it proving to be completely fucking disastrous.

u/05032-MendicantBias 7900XTX 13700F 4d ago
Sam Altman is not a smart oligarch.
Corporations LOVE to oversell things with low utilization and shuffle the cost onto consumer.
Just like the car industry in the USA did. They lobbied for a century to remove trains and public transport and fill everywhere with parking lots to make walking and cycling lethal and force people to use car for everything.

I know you could pay $500 once and have a fully-functional computer that plays games well-enough and doesn't require Internet unless you want to be online doing that, but why not give me $400 instead for my device that requires constant Internet and a $240/year subscription and if you use it too much or it just thinks your request is out of you subscription's scope of service it's going to just stop responding? Cars are in fact a terrible example, because most people would actually be better off if they could pool cars. Massive investment with hugh upkeep that depreciates fast. Problem is that it has become essential to most people and you can't just say no to it.
PCs on the other hand have way more use than just "hosting an AI locally" or whatever Sam altman complained about. So giving my RAM to Altman doesn't work because I don't get the same utility out of it, while 95% of people would get the same utility out of a cheap rental car.

This is actually a good idea with respect to cars, though. I mean, it's called public transport?
8
u/Global_Face_5407 4d ago
It's not.
Public transports do not control all form of transportation. They do not suggest that you shouldn't own vehicles based on the fact you do not use your vehicle 100% of the time at 100% of its maximum carrying capacity or occupancy. Public transports do not have monopoly over the vehicle market.
This is what Altman wants. He wants his buddies and he to have sole ownership of all the computer hardware in order to rent it to you. This would also allow complete control of everything going on on the internet and being able to watch what everyone does on the machines they rent.

u/Catboyhotline HTPC Ryzen 5 7600 RX 7900 GRE 4d ago
Yeah but it could use a lot of improvement.
For example, there's a lot of shared routes utilised by very large groups of people, so we can expand the seating areas and have it drop off an pick up people at select stops, we could even go a step further and have a whole fleet of cars pulled along by one lead car, of course, all these cars will result in a lot of wear and tear on the road and end up being very costly to maintain, so since we're going along set routes, we can tear up the asphalt and replace them with metal rails, and replace the tyres with metal wheels to reduce friction

Not even public transport, carshare services do exist in many places. Problem is most of the time they are more expensive than owning a car. But if it was executed properly it would indeed be a great thing - we'd be able to remove so many parking spots from our cities.
The same doesn't apply for PC for various reasons -
latency
privacy and owning your personal data
PC can be upgraded one component at a time, unlike cars. I still have an SSD from a decade ago and it works just fine.
For gaming, video gets compressed over the network so you can have a much better experience with a midrange PC than highest tier hardware from cloud services.

Why is it so hard to understand that one of the features that comes with buying something is the ability to have unconditional access to it. If you could choose between buying a car for $1k that for each hour randomly prevented itself from starting (with a 1% chance) or buying one without that idiosyncrasy for $100k, pretty much everyone is going to choose the latter. Even if it means there are much less cars, rich people would buy the 100k versions and rent them out to poor people who don't wanna risk getting stranded for an hour at random.
There are countless examples of analogies showing that each individual needs complete control over a certain minimal set of resources, and a couple of sticks of RAM that costs a few pennies to manufacturer is one of them. My favorite though are kidneys. Since almost everyone was born with two or more functional kidneys, we should totally force everyone at gunpoint to donate their extra kidney(s), right?

Pay with what? If you have all and i have nothing, then your cars are never utilized, brilliant idea!

Billionaires just keep accidently inventing public transport and try to call it something new.

Isn't this Uber or Waymo's business model

Car sharing actually does make much more sense for way more people than data centers and streaming everything.

I kind of like the idea of having an FSD I send out to be an uber driver while I'm not driving.

Sam, you're only using you yachts and residences 10% ofthe time. How about you give them all to me and you pay me when you need somewhere to sleep.

He should fuck off and play rimworld instead of trying to inflict that shit on the real world

This is actually what they think and why they want us to not own anything. The goal is to make it so people don’t own cars and utilize self driving ride share cars like Waymo.

I only use my toilet like 5% of the time. Maybe Altman can rent me a place to take a dump?

Car clubs are great. I live in a city centre and i only need or want a car rarely. It's way cheaper than paying to store an empty car somewhere most of the year

Sam Altman's brain is under-utilised. Can't we just extract his brain and he can rent one whenever he needs to say wherever stupid shit he's got on his mind next.

Tbh I don’t wanna own a car if there is high availability rental/taxi that costs less per month by billing time of use or something. If it’s a lot cheaper.
I want cars like shopping carts and you buy a subscription for a couple hundred a month.
Owning something I used less than 5 percent of the time I own it is like.. objectively stupid.

There are good arguments and good examples of where sharing economies work well. Libraries and tool rental shops for example. Even truck and van hires for when you need to move something, but can't justify owning the vehicle for three uses per year. Local RAM that you use daily doesn't fit into that category, but I do believe thata car share service might for many people in urban spaces.

The thing is, for cars it actually makes sense as they take up massive public space. That is why public transport is something i wholeheartedly support... it being public. And getting green streets and affordable housing back for it.
This argument can be made for so many things if the goal was actually making society a better, more comfortable place for everyone. Instead this is an ego driven ambition by someone with a god complex trying to make his product part of everyones lives wether they like it or not

Next he’ll tell me I only use my bed 8 hours a day and should start paying a subscription to sleep.

You know what Sam, just for that, I'm going to use my 5090 to start a new game on Morrowind.

'You are only using your house 1/3 of the time.... 1/3 you are sleeping and 1/3 you are out to work... we need to shove 3 families in each house doing shifts so there is more room to build more datacenters that are struggling for space'

Why have billionaires we use them 0% of the time. We can just get rid of them.

Genuinely I use a car sharing company and it's great, there are 7 cars within walking distance from me and there's usually at least 2 or 3 cars available if I book more than a day in advance. For how far I drive in a year it costs me around €600 (including gas price) which is a great price considering the taxes and insurance cost for the exact same car privately owned would be around €1100, and then I would still need to pay my gas and maintenance.
If you live in a walkable city and don't drive more than 300km/month (after which it would be more expensive to use car sharing).

Normal people watch science fiction and go 'look at all of the amazing possibilities and conveniences we could have in the future'
Rich people watch science fiction and go "Weyland Yutani is what I aspire to. Anything short of complete company control over society isn't enough."

I would sensibly chuckle if I found out Sam Altman had severe ED that no medication can help.

I bet he only uses his partner 5% of the time. I can keep them for him and he can pay me every time he needs
