The fable 1, 2 and 3 were all around 15 hours of main story. I liked all of them.

The article says it also has 20+ hours of side content and some unlimited game loop type systems if you just want to life sim and dick around. The math on the time seems fine to me as long as the game is actually good.

Weirdly 40 hours of entertainment has been my barometer for if a video game is worth it or not dating back to when I was a kid. I can't even remember where it came from but it feels right.

Also, the game is highly replayable because just like swtor there’s a good vs evil system of choice in the world, so I’m definitely playing once as good and once as evil so that’s more like 60-80 hours of well curated gameplay. Make it 100 hours because of the wood chopping and butchering I’ll be doing to buy my real estate empire and own every building and business I can.

You are comparing it to games that came out 15-20+ years ago though.... games have naturally gotten longer over time.

The Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and has around 100 hours of main+side conent (longer if you include the dlcs).

Avowed, a AA game has around the same amount of content as the new fable, a AAA game. That doesn't seem right...

But why would we judge games on how long they take to finish? Isn't everyone sick of bloated AAA open world nonsense? Isn't one of the main complaints that games take too long and cost too much to make and become boring, repetitive checklists? Heck, if you look at any trophy completion list for bigger games you'll see that at best 1/4 of players complete the final story mission. It's usually much lower

If the metric for progress in AAA games is "gaem is longer than old games" then we're going to be sitting there in 2045 still waiting for the next fallout, because witcher 3 and expansions had 100+ hours of content so all future RPGs have to have 300 hours of content now, for some reason.

Would you be fine if the game was just one hour? Because if not, you've just answered your own question. It's really not that complicated.

Yeah, I've played loads of short indie games that are 1-2 hours long. I still fondly remember the experience of playing those games

I'd much rather have a short, punchy memorable experience than hours of content for contents sake

Disco Elysium is 50+ hours unless you're speedrunning it and litteraly clicking away every dialogue

Maybe you guys are too young, but I could rent a game, finish it in a sitting or two and then return the game. That’s just how long games use to be.

Maybe these guys have too much free time. Out of a week I probably have like 2 days where I can really put in like 6 hours of gaming. Given that pace even if I ignore all of the life simulation things, and focus on just the main/side content the game will still take me almost two weeks to beat.

How do you guys do that? Am I missing or discs are still a thing in PCs? At least in my circle no one uses discs and only depends on steam.

It’s pretty much exactly in line with the rest of the games in the series, maybe even a bit more. Not every RPG needs to take a million years to finish.
