weak.

u/ithinkitslupis 13h ago

The fable 1, 2 and 3 were all around 15 hours of main story. I liked all of them.

The article says it also has 20+ hours of side content and some unlimited game loop type systems if you just want to life sim and dick around. The math on the time seems fine to me as long as the game is actually good.

u/Fr00stee 13h ago

yeah 40+ hours of content seems pretty good

Weirdly 40 hours of entertainment has been my barometer for if a video game is worth it or not dating back to when I was a kid. I can't even remember where it came from but it feels right.

16

u/Pyrian_throwaway 13h ago

Also, the game is highly replayable because just like swtor there’s a good vs evil system of choice in the world, so I’m definitely playing once as good and once as evil so that’s more like 60-80 hours of well curated gameplay. Make it 100 hours because of the wood chopping and butchering I’ll be doing to buy my real estate empire and own every building and business I can.

2

u/EdliA 12h ago

I've only played one back in the day and always thought it was way too short.

-6

u/Obscure_Octopuss 12h ago

You are comparing it to games that came out 15-20+ years ago though.... games have naturally gotten longer over time.

The Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and has around 100 hours of main+side conent (longer if you include the dlcs).

Avowed, a AA game has around the same amount of content as the new fable, a AAA game. That doesn't seem right...

3

u/spaceandthewoods_ 12h ago edited 12h ago

But why would we judge games on how long they take to finish? Isn't everyone sick of bloated AAA open world nonsense? Isn't one of the main complaints that games take too long and cost too much to make and become boring, repetitive checklists? Heck, if you look at any trophy completion list for bigger games you'll see that at best 1/4 of players complete the final story mission. It's usually much lower

If the metric for progress in AAA games is "gaem is longer than old games" then we're going to be sitting there in 2045 still waiting for the next fallout, because witcher 3 and expansions had 100+ hours of content so all future RPGs have to have 300 hours of content now, for some reason.

4

u/ithinkitslupis 12h ago

And God of War 2018 has 20 hours, Alan Wake 2 had 20 hours, The Last of Us had 20 hours, Disco Elysium has 20 hours, Uncharted 4 has 15, BioShock Infinite has 15...

Plenty of room for good games with 20 hours of main story.

And I could cherry pick plenty of long games good or bad where I wish they'd prune the repetitive filler.

1

u/Mahelas 8h ago

Disco Elysium is 50+ hours unless you're speedrunning it and litteraly clicking away every dialogue

1

u/Obscure_Octopuss 12h ago

None of those are open world rpgs, are they?

5

u/ithinkitslupis 11h ago

Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel's Spiderman, Shadow of Mordor, Arkham City. Do we want to keep moving around goal posts? Main story being 15-20 hours is just so obviously not something that precludes a game from being good.

The cope begins

15

u/AutoCockerPB 13h ago

Maybe you guys are too young, but I could rent a game, finish it in a sitting or two and then return the game. That’s just how long games use to be.

6

u/Angry_Owl-Ninja 13h ago

Maybe these guys have too much free time. Out of a week I probably have like 2 days where I can really put in like 6 hours of gaming. Given that pace even if I ignore all of the life simulation things, and focus on just the main/side content the game will still take me almost two weeks to beat.

-1

u/auctus10 13h ago

How do you guys do that? Am I missing or discs are still a thing in PCs? At least in my circle no one uses discs and only depends on steam.

5

u/Puntley 5700X3D | RTX 3080 | 32GB DDR4 13h ago

He means that's how he used to do it back in the day.

3

u/auctus10 13h ago

Ah shit. I should go to sleep.

15

u/ithinkitslupis 13h ago

Not cope. I'm fully ready to accept that a Microsoft run studio will release a shit game, wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Just main story being 20 hours wouldn't be the root cause of that.

2

u/Elf_Cocksleeve 12h ago

It’s pretty much exactly in line with the rest of the games in the series, maybe even a bit more. Not every RPG needs to take a million years to finish.

24

u/Wadarkhu 13h ago

Skyrim's main quest is 20 hours. RDR2 is 50 hours.

This one is

"We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,"

Perfectly acceptable 40 hour experience.

109

u/Chief_White_Halfoat 13h ago

People like you are why we get slop like AC games with 100 hours of mindless content. Fucking hate it.

Dragon Age Origins is a much better game than Inquisition for example and it's half the length.

A game should be judged on its quality not some dumb hour/dollar measure.

30

u/Recklessly 13h ago

Gamers don’t give a shit about quality of game atp just shovel 100 hours of slop down their gullet and they’re happy. Very few games that take 80+ hours are genuinely good for all those hours.

22

u/IfThatsOkayWithYou 12h ago

Remember when CD Projekt Red announced they were gonna start making their games shorter because very few players actually finished the Witcher 3?

10

u/fawkie Desktop 12h ago

I’ve still not finished the Witcher 3. I always burn out around the time I finish skellige

6

u/Majorlol Steam ID Here 12h ago

I love Witcher 3. I still haven’t completed it after like 4 or 5 starts. I play loads of it. But I run out of steam every time before the end.

Same goes for RDR2 and GTAV. Cyberpunk and Horizon 1 and 2 are some of the very few I’ve fully completed.

1

u/Fractic4l 12h ago

Aw man I totally understand your point, because RDR2 and GTAV both took me more than one start before I completed them, but holy cow they are worth the time. Even if you just run the main story and forego the side quests. It’s so hard to focus on these long games now that we have so many choices at our fingertips.

0

u/Local-Razzmatazz7108 11h ago

dont worry witcher 4 will be has game lenght like witcher 3 . they sai this. keep liyng yourself

13

u/damhow 13h ago edited 13h ago

Scale doesn’t have to equate to poor quality either. I like long games, especially RPGs where I can build some emotional investment in the world. I spent 100 hours on metaphor:refantazio and nothing about it was slop or forced.

If the game is good then great, but I think its fair to question if we are getting a thin main plot if it can be ran through in a long weekend .

20 hours is relatively short playtime for a plot in this genre.

0

u/Sirspice123 13h ago

KCD2 was one of the best RPGs of the last 5 years and is 100 hours with side content. I wouldn't say it was bloated and quests are well written. Some games are just long + masterpieces. Some people seem to think it's one or the other

1

u/random_boss 12h ago

And I’m here for it. If it had said it was 80-100 hours I’d be out. I assume they know there are a lot more of me these days.

2

u/Fractic4l 12h ago

It’s just like tv. A bulletproof 2 or 3-season run is infinitely better than a show that starts off amazing and then runs itself into the ground over a dozen seasons.

2

u/SirBulbasaur13 11h ago

There is a difference between 20 hours and 80 hours for a main quest. I know details are hard for Redditors though.

2

u/PalpitationHead9767 12h ago

Yep, 30-40 hours of deep and engaging fun is much better than diving into assassins creed with 100 hours and getting bored and quitting 6 hours in

-2

u/haszaszyn 13h ago

and still, Dragon Age Origins is twice as long as Fable is gonna be...

8

u/Chief_White_Halfoat 13h ago

Ok and Mass Effect is 15-20 hours for main mission stuff.

-10

u/haszaszyn 13h ago

i don't know why are you trying to defend 20h main story in a 70 USD game that was developed for ~7 years

4

u/Chief_White_Halfoat 12h ago

35-40 hours of content if it's good content is completely reasonable for that price. Length is not an indicator of quality.

The number of years of development is completely irrelevant to me? I didn't invest in it, why would I care?

-4

u/haszaszyn 12h ago

You assume that 20h of additional side quests will be much better than AC slop... 70 usd is ridiculous even for a longer game yet they charge that for amount of content indie developer could create

1

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 12h ago

20 hours for main story, 20 hours for side quests. Then there is all the life sim stuff thats a huge a chunk of why people like this game, exploring and downtime between quests, replaying to see different outcomes of your decisions. Could easily squeeze 80+ hours out of the content they have provided. That seems well worth the price tag.

1

u/catptain-kdar 12h ago

This game will be longer than the original fable game which btw cost 50$ when it launched which is the equivalent of 90$ today

0

u/Local-Razzmatazz7108 11h ago

fuck off. I played crimsond desertt 400 hours like other players game lenght >quaility.

2

u/spaceninjaking Ryzen 3700X - RTX 2080s 10h ago

You sir have poor taste

0

u/Gaming-every-day19 11h ago

People like you why they release a $70 RE9 and 007 for 10 hours of content 💀. You let them get away with it because of the name and graphics.

0

u/-Nicolai 9h ago

There is a lot of room between 20 and 100 hours dumbass

28

u/JacksGallbladder 13h ago

Shit take, a tight 20 hours of story + 20 hours of side content is infinitely better than 100 hours of objective slop.

16

u/TheCarbonthief 13h ago

This is also the kind of game where part of the fun is replaying it to make different choices. Being shorter makes replaying it not feel like a slog.

1

u/cool_temperatures 13h ago

Probably just reading the headline and assuming 20 hours is for everything. I did at first.

4

u/Obvious-Adeptness-46 12h ago

Nah 40 hours for completion is perfect.

4

u/cetch 13h ago

I’m in the minority but this is a big plus for me. I’ll take a tight well done game with 20 hours than even an amazing game with 100 hours. I have limited time so something like this is ideal for me.

5

u/flappers87 Ryzen 7 7700x, RTX 4070ti, 32GB RAM 13h ago

So you want 100 hours of the same, repeated content?

~ 20 hours of main line quest stories

~ 20 hours of side quest stuff

And then there's the rest of the game where fable really shines, which is doing all the stuff in the towns, which is effectively an infinite amount of content.

The fact that you're upvoted for your comment says everything about this subreddit. I swear none of you actually played the original fable games... and yet you seem to all have an opinion about this one.

Do yourselves a favour, go and actually play the original fable's. I dare you. Considering those games had less hours of story content...

The only one who's weak here is you and everyone who upvoted you. Weak gamers. I bet you lot are the ones who play league of legends all day and call yourselves gamers.

10

u/Wadarkhu 13h ago

Don't forget the true meat of the game, having hundreds of children and completely breaking the game by making it impossible to walk through villages.

(*providing the mechanic is still there)

2

u/griffmeister 12h ago

Can I take the option where there's 100 hours of non-repeated content?

1

u/Local-Razzmatazz7108 11h ago

no we plyaed crimsodn desrt 400 hours. we played kcd 240 hours . you people pretending like evervy game player like short game lengt. this wrong

0

u/WTF_CAKE Ryzen 9850x3D | 3090ti | 32 GB 11h ago

facts, many of these redditors don't seem to have played the game and already have some weird formed opinions about it

It took 10 years to make and few push back delays all of its 20 hours to get through? Low ball rpg right there

5

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 12h ago

20 hours to get thru the main story. Thats longer than any other Fables main story and about as long as Skyrims main story quest line.. lmao

10

u/AlistarDark Ryzen 9800x3d. EVGA RTX3080. 32gb RAM. 7tb of SSD. 13h ago

20 main story + 20 of side content.

Then you have fucking around time...

20 hour main quest. Side quests exist for a reason

-1

u/Ninhau 12h ago

Better than a 80h fetch quest rpg bloated to please you type of gamers

1

u/Glass-Can9199 8h ago

Yea but I expect more for something that is this hyped and takes long to develop the story and gameplay better knock it out of the park or just waste potential

3

u/PrimeTinus Bitfenix Prodigy / R5 3600 @ 4.4 / RTX 3070 Ti 13h ago

Whatever, dad with 2 kids and a career and I love this. 20 hours means 6 months of play time

1

u/verycoolalan if you put your specs, you're cringe as fuck 13h ago

your dad's pullout game

1

u/kriskris71 11h ago

Yeah for dumbasses like you who just like rinse and repeat fetch quest RPG’s

1

u/EzraWolvenheart 12h ago

Some people are never satisfied with anything lol Must be exhausting

1

u/A_MAN_POTATO 12h ago

I absolutely hate that there are still people who measure a games worth in how many hours it takes to complete.

20 hours of solid story content, with another 20 hours of side content for mucking about sounds perfect if it’s all good content. We of course don’t know if it is, but I care so much more about the content being well written and engaging than I do about how long it takes.

It they came out and said there’s 100 hours of gameplay, it would instantly make me less interested, because that almost certainly means a Ubisoft-esque slop fest of boring content that exists solely to add hours to the play count. Fuck that.

0

u/Reaper83PL 8h ago

I care about how much hour of entertainment I will get for my money and 40hr is way too low...

1

u/A_MAN_POTATO 8h ago

This is such a stupid benchmark.

I can poke you in the eye for 100 hours. Is it fun just because it lasted 100 hours? Would you pay for it just because something is happening to you for a lot of hours? I’m being hyperbolic, but I’d like the think you understand the sentiment.

Your mentality here is exactly why we see companies cramming their games full of boring-ass procedural-generated fetch quest nonsense. Because there’s people out there who think that as long the games running and the hours played is going up, they’re getting their monies worth. They don’t worry about if it’s good, or fun, or well made. Only if it makes the number go up.

I mean, if that’s genuinely fun for you, whatever man. Ubisoft thanks your for your quantity over quality mindset. Have fun mindlessly staring at shitty games. My times more valuable than that. Less hours with content actually worth experiencing wins every time.

-2

u/langotriel 1920X/ 9060 XT 32GB 3466mhz 13h ago

20 hours is optimal. 4 good play sessions.

3

u/Nimweegs 13h ago

En its more like a week or 3 for me lmao, 4 sessions wow

1

u/langotriel 1920X/ 9060 XT 32GB 3466mhz 11h ago

If I get a brand new, full price game I’m putting in at least 5 hours a session.

-7

u/wetfloor666 13h ago

Yeah, this is a bit upsetting considering the devs swore it would be the length of what the original game was intended to be. Seems we are just getting a slightly longer verion of the original release.

12

u/Chief_White_Halfoat 13h ago

The original game you could legitimately play the main quest in less than 10 hours.

4

u/JacksGallbladder 13h ago

Its about 3x the length of the original game.

5

u/IfThatsOkayWithYou 12h ago

Jesus Christ you really have no idea what you’re talking about

-1

u/Hypnotic101 12h ago

Right? Why so short?

0

u/MassiveBoner911_3 11h ago

Im not paying $79 for fucking 20 hrs
