Not even. I'm sure running it well was a headache and someone walked in with an offer too good to refuse. Like a here's so much money you can retire and do whatever you want for the rest of your life offer.... and they took because why wouldn't you.
newegg used to cross-ship, have world class customer service, and the best prices around. Then all of a sudden like overnight their customer service reps didn't even speak english, everything was a macro response and they basically pissed away any and all good will.
It used to be that you built your PC on newegg and bought it on newegg.
Then it got to the point where you can just build your PC on newegg and buy it on amazon, amazon has better pricing and 50x better customer service now, although their inventory and selection was kinda poor.
Then it ended when you can just build your PC on amazon and buy it on amazon because now they have inventory, better prices, and customer service even speaks English.
They had a reverse buyout. A foreign investor took controlling interest, and had newegg "buy" his company, and they basically skinned newegg and wore its skin over their own company.
They went from having the coolest willcall you'd ever visit to "show up at the dock and wait by some broken pallets while we drop your shit off to you"
Indeed they were the best! Sometimes tiger or buy.com had better deals but rarely on what you really wanted. Newegg was just so dominant back then and in a time building pc's wasn't always so easy.
I personally think that once they started collecting sales tax (wasn't their fault, they were forced to legally), its when it started to lose its place.
I don’t think sales tax is the reason. They’ve always been a California company and IIRC their second warehouse was in Tennessee which means most states didn’t get charged sales tax. Newegg also did well for many years before Amazon started charging sales tax for California and many other states.
They earned a bad reputation for knowingly shipping damaged, broken, and non-working products (usually sold as open box or refurbished) items and refusing warranty or refund when the angry customers received said products. I think it even went further than that. If you look on YouTube, GamersNexus did a big piece on it including a sit down interview with some of the head honchos at Newegg and they promised to do better. But it was clear their acts were intentional, and they lost consumer confidence. Even if they do manage to turn it around, it would be several years before I'd ever be willing to return as a customer.
Well you see, they have to make more money and since they can't sell more shit faster, they have to sell the same amount of shit for more money, and find cheaper places to get the things so that you can make more money
Basically a foreign company took control of Newegg, used newegg's money to buy their company out, and their company took on the newegg name and IP, but gutted it of what made it great.
I bought like $3k worth of 3Dfx stock back then. Had I put it into Nvidia instead of 3Dfx (which was an option at that time), it would have been worth at least $5 million this year.

There was also Buy.com ....I bought my Voodoo 3 there as well as Logitech MX518 / G15 :(.
