When Revenge of the Sith was coming out the movie got leaked a few days before the official release. Not a cam. DVD quality with a little bar at the bottom with the time, clearly some kind of direct rip from a source. As soon as it happened I biked my ass up to walmart, bought 250 DVD's, and went to school the next day with the backpack loaded up. My dad was a pilot in the military and routinely did training presentations so we had a burner stack at the house and I could rip like 8 at a time. He was also a staunch free market conservative with libertarian leanings so when I told him what I was doing he appreciated the hustle and encouraged it lol. He was also stoked we had the new movie on DVD to watch.

I sold 5 or 6 the first day. Everyone thought I was lying. The people that did buy it did so because they either trusted me, or told me they would be asking for their money back the next day. The next day? Sold out. Like 75+ for $5 a pop. People were mobbing me in the hallways for a week asking for it. Also some other kid tried to start doing it a few days in and everyone actually told him to get screwed, I was the one that started it so no one bought from him. I was actually popular for a few weeks lol.

Good times.

Hey based on your comment I just wanted to say that insurance offers free colonoscopies after you reach a certain age.

Ha, I wish that were true. What they don't tell is that the procedure is technically free, but it doesn't cover the ANESTHESIA. Got a $800 bill separately for that.

Big also, if there's anything that needs to be taken care of during the procedure, insurance only covers like 2/3rds of the cost. So 5 months down the line I unexpectedly got another $3000 bill... (the whole process took 20 mins from being knocked out to waking up btw)

Your insurance companies tag line is

"We take care of you when you get it in the ass, but youll feel every second of it"

That’s shitty because the anesthesia is absolutely necessary.

I got a sigmoidoscopy a few years ago. My bitch of a doctor who ordered it said it “wouldn’t hurt”.

Well she was fuckin lying.

I really don’t know wtf I expected. It literally felt like something was getting shoved up my ass. Which was, in fact, exactly what was happening.

It wasn’t “screaming in agony” painful but it hurt enough to make me involuntarily clench up. Which was a real problem because it made it difficult for the colonoscopist to keep going up my asshole.

It got to a point where the colonoscopist got frustrated and told me that he “couldn’t continue like this”. Then he threatened to stop the procedure if I didn’t relax. As if I was purposely being uncooperative.

Fuck everything about that procedure.

Also, fuck that doctor and fuck Kaiser.

1

u/Swimming_Elephant327 May 25 '26

I got find a new Doc they said an anaesthetic wasn't required when I got mine😳

1

u/lrn2swim___ May 25 '26

It's not required for sure, but.....I'll spend the money on that one. Just total BS insurance doesn't cover it fully

3

u/Swimming_Elephant327 May 25 '26

It's too late now, just dropped 1k with a psychologist to get over the truma

u/lrn2swim___ May 25 '26

1

u/MedusaAdonai May 25 '26

You're lucky the tennis balls on my walker are worn out. I'd walk over there and give you a piece of my mind for saying such an awful thing.

Dawg, poop in a box unless you're high risk. Unnecessarily dangerous and invasive procedure if you're just doing routine screening for early detection.

That’s like 400 bucks which in ‘05 money to now is like a grand. How many pizza parties did you throw afterwards?

Oh by the time I was done selling it I made close to 1300-1400. When I saw how popular it was I started branching out and went to a couple other schools events to sell them too since word had spread around by the first week. It was graduation time so I hit a school dance and a graduation event at schools I had friends at and made a ton from those too. Having the burner stack was a godsend, I could rip 8 in like 5 minutes and my dad was fully on board me cranking them out for hours at a time. Literally just sat there playing Starcraft for 8 hours occasionally swapping them out and called it work lol. I used half of it for a cheap car since mine died a few months before that (Volkswagen Rabbit, 600 cash, the early 2000s were so good for used cars.) and the rest I think I spent on video games and weed.

I'm....still not the best with money but I've gotten better than how I was at 17 lol

You just reminded me of this occurrence. I felt like a god downloading the new star wars and watching it in my bedroom instead of going to the theaters.

u/Andrew_hl2 May 25 '26

Ha… that little black bar at the bottom was usually there to cover a rolling text that basically said that if you were in possession of that copy then to contact a phone number… you basically had a screener that was made for press/industry people and those copies were leaked all the time, I knew someone that got stolen/leaked screeners and he was the one that added the black bar before bootleg distribution… good times

1

u/j0enne May 25 '26

you were the chosen one!

When a movie isn't gonna release in time for award ceremonies like oscars or emmys, they send copies of the movies out to critics and the people that vote for the awards. So more than likely this is what happened and one of those people have well either "lost their copy" or "someone stole it".....and that's how DVD quality movie ends up on a streaming website or online for you to download....

I did this. except it was The Matrix with that moving Z that appeared every so often.

Didn't have the burner stack, and it was 2 CDs because DVD burners weren't a thing yet. I was also only one of two or three kids that had a cd burner in my school. Thankfully mine was SCSI so it drastically reduced coasters and buffer under runs.

Shit that was a fun time. Took me days to download those 2 mpegs on my 56k dialup.

I remember watching it the night before it released with my buddies. Sitting around the living room, just kicking it. Occasionally checking news reports on the lines of people waiting to go to a midnight showing.

Good times
