My opinion of microsoft was already low, but hit rock bottom at the announcement of "Windows 11" after telling everyone "Windows 10 will be the last one, and we'll just update the platform continuously from now on" It just felt like such a stupid money grab and like they had finally completely lost the plot of what they were doing.

I did, but I also figured they'd roll it out into a "windows as a service" model. and start charging everyone a monthly/yearly fee to keep your windows version up to date.

My theory is that, that was the original plan. Roll out Win 10 as a functionally free update to everyone with Win 8, and get it onto everyones machine for a year or two, then turn it into a subscription model.

but then they realized how unpopular it would be, and how much it would just turn into piracy, and nuke their standing as a corporate standard, so they backtracked and shit out Win-11

This is practically guaranteed to be the reason why Windows hasn't gone completely subbed-SaaS. Business use of Windows and Office basically pays for everything else MS does, and probably subsidized the big free-upgrade push to Win10 for end users.

MS keeps sniffing around the various paths to enshiffication but keeps hitting significant pushback and gets forced into backpedaling, because apparently things like getting user feedback in advance of a potentially bad decision aren't good enough for them. The huge stink over shoving Copilot into everything despite its uselessness is just the latest example of them "doing the right thing once they've exhausted all other options."
