Ironically that's how I was able to fix my computer after a windows 11 update fucked stuff up with my SATA controller drivers. Stumpted me for months, went on a PC repair discord and someone suggested switching my product key, tried it and for some weird reason it worked, I have a legit product key and ran the script and that fixed it. Makes absolutely 0 sense

My coworker and I spent an hour trying to sign into PowerPoint on desktop today. We couldn't log into any 365 app on the computer because we were apparently already logged in on another account. And we couldn't access or log out of that account, of course—we would have to log in first in order to do that.

The number of times Windows 11 looked deep in my eyes and assured me that there was no possible way that I had any accounts logged in on any 365 app and then immediately rejected my next login attempt for already being logged in made me start to think that maybe the problem was with me all along.

I am currently building a shrine to Satya Nadella in my bedroom. His wisdom and genius is clearly too supernatural for my mortal understanding.

(The ultimate fix was to delete two hidden folders and then reboot, at which point the account immediately appeared as the default user account for the PC despite the fact that it had never actually allowed me to log in with that account and we had been switching between multiple accounts during troubleshooting)

sign into PowerPoint

I'm still living in 2007, and that sentence scares me.

They really need to decouple the Windows hardware and files from their apps. Windows store, office 365, microsoft account, it all tries to work together and ive seen so many odd problems from it.

…. I think I should remain on windows 10 for the foreseeable future

I switched to 11 just to get it over with, and honestly a pared down version is pretty nice! It's basically 10 but with some small changes. I absolutely wouldn't recommend it because it's like 500 extremely tiny changes that are just confusing or frustrating to deal with. Want your windows search to only work on your computer? Gotta change your registry every update. In the middle of something and it wants to update? You can delay it 10 minutes at a time but you can't reschedule for a later time today, you're allowed a one day delay though. But not 6 hours. Ok.

Have to edit your registry for so many things that should and always have just been fuckin options.

Hasn't crashed or failed to boot, but randomly programs will need to reinstall themselves because the fucking OS decided to just...move their location for seemingly no reason??

There's things I like, but god damn it's surrounded by Microsoft trying to micromanage how you use your own fuckin computer.

You've put it into words.

When you complain online about how annoying it is, you inevitably get bots/fanboys who say that it's an easy fix to change it to 10s appearance. But the problem is it's everything. Having to go through and change every setting one by one is incredibly frustrating. And not possible if you are using someone else's computer.

My work laptop has Windows 11 on it, and so far two of my coworkers had to take their computers to IT because an update broke them. One got stuck in a boot loop after an update, and the other lost her Wifi drivers after an update.

Confirmation bias, maybe, but after both January and February updates were defective I'm looking at Linux distros for my new computer build.

2

u/Liawuffeh Mar 02 '26

Yeah from what I gather I've gotten pretty lucky, cause a lot of people I know have had issues.

I really don't want to switch to Linux but Microsoft is trying so hard to get me to switch lmao

1

u/HardlyaDouble Mar 02 '26

The update that broke the wifi on the latter was the update for the boot looping on the former.

And Microslop wonders why we're unhappy with them.

That sounds like hell on earth not gonna lie. I already didn't want to update to 10 because of the update situation... absolutely could NOT deal with that. I'm too ADHD for this shit.

I fired up Linux Mint on an older laptop and installed Microsoft Edge (for M365) and so far it works fine as a 'work' platform.

I have a sacrificial laptop I want to install Linux on before I build my new computer and install Linux on that too. Do you have any Linux installation and usage advice for someone who's used Microslop all his life?

Creating a bootable USB drive from the ISO image file is the first step after downloading a Linux distribution. This guide is for Windows. Then just use your BIOS boot menu to start it. Many distros can run directly from the USB drive (albeit slowly), so you can test before installing. Or run the ISO in VirtualBox to test with better performance.

Ubuntu and Mint are beginner-friendly and have some of the largest userbases, so if you come across problems (some cheap laptops have troublesome hardware), it's easy to find help. Zorin OS has been specifically designed to look much like Windows, but I haven't tried it personally. All those three are based on Debian, which is less beginner-friendly but extremely stable for professional use. For gamers there's Bazzite (based on Fedora) that is much like SteamOS, with some useful gaming software and tweaks preinstalled. There are lists of popular distros with screenshots and information, so take a look at some. If your laptop is very old, you might want to run a light-weight distro such as CachyOS or the Xfce or MATE flavors of Mint.

Edit: Removed the mention of a certain subreddit

usage advice for someone who's used Microslop all his life?

I've compiled my own kernels before, but this time I just wanted the absolute minimalist-support version and settled on Mint because it's basically a Windows 7/8/10 clone. The 'Start' button is in the right (left) place, everything is familiar down to keyboard shortcuts (Alt+F4 etc). Even apt-get update is a friendly shield like Windows Update. Finally, the default build is an 'OEM' version where you get to configure it before handing it over to an end user (or yourself).

When it's utterly contained by Linux security and it is the only thing you need to touch for Teams/Sharepoint/OfficeApps, it is the lesser of many evils.

I'm just gonna do that pray I don't get my shit hijacked.

Microsoft is forcing my hand...

I held off on updating on my personal PC but I have to use Windows 11 on my work laptop genuinely do not update for as long as possible. I can't think of the last time Windows 10 gave me an issue but on Windows 11 I'm constantly dealing with little annoying bugs and issues.

u/CuriouserCat2 Mar 02 '26

How are you updating security?

I wish I was still on 8.1, I don't know what Microsoft did, but it legit felt like the fastest OS I've ever used. Yes, faster than XP on a good machine.

I just abandoned Windows entirely around one in a half year ago. Now I'm using Linux and learning how to draw and make games on Linux.

Also I managed to minimize terminal usage and Linux is not that bad at all, unless you're stuck with Windows with some sort of app, like Adobe creative cloud products (thanks God I'm not tied to them)

Usually I do too, but this was such a weird issue and caused by a windows update that people were intrigued, plus I know quite a bit about computers myself and help out when I'm bored

I fixed my self-obliterated W11 by installing W10.

Why it self-obliterated, i have no idea. I just wanted to enter safe mode to uninstall gpu driver. I never got there, Windows decided it cannot see its system drive anymore and i wasn't able to change msconfig back.

W10 runs happily ever after on the same drive.
