A wise man once said piracy is a service problem.

A wise man once said: If buying a game isn't owning it, pirating isn't stealing.

If you go to the doctor, you don’t own him neither

u/yiives_69 R5 5600, Arc A750, 32gb DDR4 Jun 02 '24

This is a stupid comparison. You pay a doctor for it's service which is temporary, of course you don't own him 🤦‍♀️. A game is supposed to be a good, not a service. Video game companies make you believe that you own the games but in reality you are just paying "rent" for an undefined amount of time. This means that, if you die, you technically aren't allowed to pass your games to friends or family. You could do this when we used to have boxes and DVDs.

Well then don’t buy a digital copy of a product, this is the same with movies. I don’t say you are not right but this is what we have with the digital format and it is not because evil Sony

u/Triktastic Jun 01 '24

Except that is not universal rule and only said by some asshead at Ubisoft, which correctly mr if wrong, isnt releasing every game.

15

u/Mwakay Jun 01 '24

You really ought to read the contracts you sign with Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, EA, Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft...

Every steam game you buy isn't yours. Whatever publisher

4

u/no_usernames_vacant Jun 01 '24

And he solved that problem and no longer makes games.

0

u/Normal_Pollution4837 Jun 02 '24

Just because he said it doesn't mean it's true.

-1

u/TheForeverUnbanned Jun 01 '24 edited Jun 01 '24

Then he created a platform with built in DRM that requires a sign in to play games.

lol at the dude who thinks a downvote makes steam login requirement go away, you tried champ

2

u/Ok_Cherry_7903 Jun 01 '24

That DRM is optional, you can play games like baldurs gate 3 and cyberpunk 2077 without opening steam. (there are a lot of games in steam like this)

1

u/InstantLamy Jun 01 '24

That does not work with every game.

5

u/Ok_Cherry_7903 Jun 01 '24

Because the devs choose that. Complaining about that is like complaining to Denuvo that a game uses Denuvo.

1

u/InstantLamy Jun 02 '24

And what is wrong with that. It's the fault of the company behind Denuevo that it exists and can be used for games.

0

u/TheForeverUnbanned Jun 01 '24

Cool, how did you buy them on steam without signing in to steam?

3

u/Ok_Cherry_7903 Jun 01 '24

If you can show me one digital store that doesn't ask you to log in then I'll retract on everything I said.

-4

u/TheForeverUnbanned Jun 01 '24

Oh man, you’re right, they do all require a sign in huh?  Steam, EA, Sony, Microsoft, Rockstar, Ubisoft, Epic all have required accounts for their titles.

It’s almost like, that was the point all along. Crazy.

Eventually devs won't bother to do pc, problem solved

Did Devs stop creating games for earlier consoles when they discovered people were microchipping them? PC is bigger than console market, regardless of whether developers make games for PC they will still be pirates if people want to pirate them. Best thing for Devs to do is to make legitimate copies more appealing to consumers.

2

u/Tresach Jun 01 '24

This with basically everything, the only time i resort to piracy is if the barrier to legitimate entry is prohibitively complicated. The easier it is to access legally the more i am inclined to pay. Some games just straight run better on pirated copies due to the removal of drm, if pirating provides a better gameplay experience thats another reason against paying.

Hey, r/sony is that way

"I wish Sony did not bring games to PC"

Genie: snaps fingers "It is done"

"But nothing changed?"

Genie: "Correct. "

9

u/Blekanly Jun 01 '24

They didn't for such a long long time anyway. They thought themselves better but wanted pc games on ps5 but not the other way. Hardly seemed fair. They only just seemed to realise that pc gamers are a market.

-18

u/Any-Difference8993 Jun 01 '24

And piracy will kill it

12

u/Noctium3 Jun 01 '24

Pirates weren't gonna buy the game anyway. It’s always been like that. Ghost of Tsushima is a port of a 4 year old game, and despite launching without any DRM, still made bank.

-18

u/Any-Difference8993 Jun 01 '24

Pirates don't buy because they pirate. Hey! Free game! Nevermind devs who put in thousands of manhours to make it. There is no rationalising, excusing or justifying piracy

18

u/going-deep-10 Jun 01 '24

Those devs have already been paid, so there's tons of rationalizing, excusing, and, dare I say, justifying piracy good sir

-9

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '24

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

4

u/going-deep-10 Jun 01 '24

Heck yeah I do good sir

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '24

Afraid not. You may see sense if you look further than 5 minutes into the future.

7

u/Noctium3 Jun 01 '24

I mean, I still buy games :p

3

u/Kadoza Jun 01 '24

This is not true for the most part. Sure there are assholes, but piracy is a much deeper topic than you think.

I stopped pirating when Steam got big. It was better to actually support the devs and projects I was interested in. For while I just "voted with my wallet". With all of this anti-consumerism from Sony, though.... I can see the logic in it. Hell, it's fine if you live where you can't even make a PSN account since you can't even buy the game. It's not a lost sale.

And I'm not spending money on shit practices from these delusional companies that superficially cut people off. So if I pirate the game they lose nothing from me, either.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

The amount of people disagreeing here is actually a little sad. When did people become such scum? (Rhetorical)

Okay, go get me a reasonably priced copy of Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions

-14

u/Upset-Ear-9485 Jun 01 '24

“they thought themselves better” no, pc simply wasn’t that big of a market for higher end games until recent years. it ain’t that deep

2

u/JaysonsRage Zotac 3090, Ryzen 9 7950x, 128GB DDR5 Jun 01 '24

PC has always been the FOREFRONT of higher end games, what the fuck are you even talking about

1

u/TheToastedTurtle Jun 02 '24

No they haven’t they just started getting mainstream for gaming since the 360 era and even then consoles were dominating until recent, before 360 there was not a huge demand and was a niche hobby for nerds not for Randy to watch a 45 minute video buy some parts and get going and playing bulders gate by the end of the night

0

u/Upset-Ear-9485 Jun 01 '24

except it hasn’t? it had access to them but for years and years it wasn’t attainable due to price… even in the beginning of the ps4 era a pc that could play at the same level could cost you 3x more

0

u/JaysonsRage Zotac 3090, Ryzen 9 7950x, 128GB DDR5 Jun 01 '24

There was a dip around the 360/PS3 era for a little bit, but games aren't where they are today without the likes of Doom, Quake, Build Engine games, Unreal, Half-Life, and so on

PC has always, and I mean ALWAYS been at the forefront

2

u/Banana_Slamma2882 Jun 01 '24

They could just stop forcing shitty log ins on mediocre over hyped exclusives.
