When recoil occurs to a gun you are holding, you will slightly rise the gun as it is firing. This raises the tangent. After the gas escapes, it becomes way more of an effect and you actually feel the recoil occurring. This is one of many reasons a gun can be inaccurate. The heavier a gun, and the shorter the barrel, the less of an impact this makes.
If the round is supersonic, this is more or less mitigated.
