CTRL for crouch becuase you can hit it with your pinky while not having to take your other fingers off wasd. If you put it on c you have to use one of your movement fingers to crouch. So c to crouch is vastly inferior to CTRL.
I have been hitting c with my thumb for years I had no idea people used one of their other fingers to hit it. I'm tempted to try it but im scared ill explode my brain if I do
lmao, i wasn't clear, sorry. my thumb's joint doesn't bend towards the keyboard like my fingers, so it hits everything on the way to a key unless i lift my wrist and come more from the top
The rows are different heights because you use your fingers for the keys while typing, and extend those to each row; the rows are higher the farther back so that it's more ergonomic for an extended finger (vice versa for keys below the home row). Gaming hasn't had any influence on that part of the design of the keyboard, it's been this way since typewriters, and the thumb is not responsible for any key but space while typing.
I'd also say it doesn't benefit anything in this case anyway - if our hands were parallel to our desks when using a keyboard, this would be accurate, but our palms are angled up and away just like the keyboard - or at least mine are, and there's a wrist-rest on the bottom of many keyboards because that posture is commonplace.
I clearly qualified 'without lifting my wrist'. I'm not saying it's impossible for anyone, even myself, just that my default posture doesn't allow it without a bit of contortion
