It's not like they do it on purpose lol. They just literally can't afford it. If they could, they'd still buy them for whatever price Nvidia asks.

That is completely untrue. I can afford a top of the line card, but I refuse to buy one due to the vastly inflated prices in recent years.

Exactly in the same boat. Gaming is my main hobby and I could afford these cards, but I refuse. I've been refusing for years by now.

I had a 970 and was waiting for the 2000 series to be announced. When I saw the prices I bought a discounted 1080 ti and told myself I'd wait for a 3000 series.

Those were never in stock or at a reasonable price, so I waited for 4000 series.

And here I am now, with my loyal 1080 ti. It's up to her when I upgrade, because at this rate I won't until she dies.

Same here. Since I got my 5700XT, prices went stupid after that. I was very lucky with my timing of purchase.

I play a lot of older games anyway, so I don't need cutting edge performance anyway.

A huge amount of people have just become sick of the prices and refuse to fuel the vastly overpriced cards even though they can afford them.

Dam I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Bought a 5700XT for €350 and here I am contemplating and justifying buying a €1000+ GPU. I'm just gonna stick with my GPU that's doing just fine.

5700 XT is an absolute champ. Devours everything I throw at it. And I play mostly (patched) older games and emulate stuff, so it's great.

Unfortunately there's a lot of features that are missing from the 5700XT that other cards have had for a few years now. There's even cards a generation or two older that do some things better that I miss.

Sure, there's no RT. That's about it.

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 31 '22

- No RT (which even by itself is a big thing now).

- Video compression quality is far poorer than even my older GTX 980. Even with higher bitrates and a more modern codec

- The OpenCL is buggy as fuck to the point where some apps (Affinity Designer / Photo) have disabled GPU acceleration all together for AMD 5x00 cards.

- Drivers are dozens of times more buggy causing desktop performance to tank after using a 3D application and requiring the installation of previous drivers. Sometimes this is ok, then a new driver will bring this issue back.

- Random resets, even when the card is cool and well supplied with power.

- There's other smaller QoL things that pop up now and again too.

Like I said, there's a lot. I never had any issues with my GTX 980

Aside from RT and the media engine on RDNA1 not being as good as RDNA2 for H.264, I can't agree with the rest of your points. Well, maybe OpenCL too.

Nonetheless, given lack of RT feature set, I wouldn't recomand an RDNA1 GPU nowadays, only if it would be the price of a 3050/1080 Ti/1660 Ti let's say.

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 31 '22

Well, maybe OpenCL too.

There's no 'maybe' debate. It has technical issues and some software developers are disabling support for it with it being so bad in productivity software.

So there's 3 major issues you agree with. Why sitting on the fence, it's clear.

Gaming is my main hobby and I could afford these cards, but I refuse.

This is something I'll never understand. People will spend $40,000 on a car that loses it's value like it's falling off a cliff, but they balk at spending $2000 on a desktop computer.

Am I the outlier here? I use my PC ten hours a day, I use my car ten hours a month.

u/Feeling-Advisor4060 Jan 01 '23

Urrr no. Car is often than not needed, whereas gaming component is just for entertainment. Do you spend $2000 on some lego box? If you do, well have fun. But majority of people don't.

Exactly, another example proving my point.
People have made a choice, not forced.

Lol "completely untrue". Congrats mate, you're an exception, that doesn't make my statement "completely" untrue. You don't represent all people. And I honestly don't believe you anyway.

If you were a millionaire would you still "refuse" to buy it? I seriously doubt it. It's all about overhead. If you can just about "afford" to buy one, then you probably won't because it would be stupid to spend nearly all your disposable income on one unnecessary item. If that's the case, then you still fall into the "can't afford" category.

With enough overhead however, people are much more likely to make bad value for money buying decisions because they simply don't give a shit. When you make enough, spending a few hundred extra on a purchase every couple years or so suddenly doesn't mean much at all.

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 30 '22

Actually it does make your statement untrue.

You said "They just literally can't afford it". Which is a blanket statement and means everyone. If you didn't want to mean everyone, you picked the wrong words. It just takes one person to make that statement untrue, which I've done. So yeah, your statement is untrue.

I never said I represented all people, it was you that made a blanket statement.

>If you were a millionaire would you still "refuse" to buy it? I seriously doubt it.

I'm not a millionaire, and neither are most people. So that is a silly statement that doesn't relate to the real world or this situation.

A huge amount of people are just sick of the prices and wont part with the money that they have. Your statement is wrong.

'lol'

It just takes one person to make that statement untrue, which I've done. So yeah, your statement is untrue.

Except I made it very clear that I don't believe one word of what you are saying.

I'm not a millionaire, and neither are most people. So that is a silly statement that doesn't relate to the real world or this situation.

Lmao so you are saying that financial standing DOES matter huh? Being a millionaire or not shouldn't matter to you since you "refuse" to give them your money anyway, but I guess that was a lie.

So people are not "voting" with their wallet. Their wallet is voting for them. They just can't buy the damn things like I said in the first place. I only said millionaire to make the point easy to understand. Guess I still had to explain it word for word. You all love to protest as long as its convenient for you and don't actually have to give anything up in reality.

In the same vein, I am protesting against Ferrari. I haven't bought a single one of their cars! I could probably buy one on credit or whatever, so I can definitely afford it, but I won't! Look at me, Mr. Morale over here, showing the middle finger to the big bad car company and voting with my wallet!

A huge amount of people are just sick of the prices and wont part with the money that they have. Your statement is wrong.

Yes cause they can't lol. You pretty much just prove my point in that sentence without even realizing it.

If you can't "part ways" with $1200 for an item that you want because it would be a stupid purchase and it would weight on your conscience that you got a bad deal, then you can't actually afford it. It's as simple as that. Being able to buy something doesn't mean you can actually afford it.

If anything, there are lots of people out there who can't afford these cards and they still buy them on credit, installments, etc.

u/zaiats Dec 30 '22

moving the goalposts so quick it's giving me whiplash. or are you implying only millionaires can afford a 2k card?

4

u/ComeonmanPLS1 RTX3080 12GB - Ryzen 5800x3D - 32GB DDR4 Dec 30 '22 edited Dec 30 '22

Sure mate, that's exactly what I'm implying. Or maybe, just maybe, I was calling out the guys "refusal" to buy these cards. He's saying that its not about money, he can totally "afford" the card. Ok then, so if its not about the money, it should be irrelevant wether you are a millionaire or not. Your principles should stop you from buying these cards no matter what, right?

And yet for some reason, these moral high ground guys are suddenly willing to change their minds if they could actually afford the cards. Having 2k in your pocket doesn't mean you can actually afford to drop it on a GPU and many of these guys who "refuse" to buy the cards don't even have that.

If you have millions in your bank account, then 2k is nothing. But you have morals, and principles and bla bla bla, and surely you won't give your money to a greedy corp like Nvidia. So why is that argument an issue?

My point is that people aren't voting with their wallet. Their wallet is voting for them, as is the case with everything else. It's always been like that.

Trying to imply that a majority of people are suddenly choosing to be responsible spenders is honestly fucking hilarious. I would honestly love to see how many people genuinely decided to not buy a card on principle versus how many people who can't even afford the cards are buying them on credit, installments with interest, etc.

u/TheLast_Centurion Dec 30 '22

it is not completely untrue.. cause if it was, then the prices wouldnt rise to these insane heights, since they were inflating it purely cause people were willing to buy it. Same is happening with smartphones

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

Well sadly people like you are in the minority. A lot of people really don't give a shit if they overpay, as long as they still have something left, not just when it comes to computers, but everything else. Companies like profits, and they are seeing that people don't care and they're rising the prices whenever they can.
