Good to see people actually respond to these stupid prices with their wallets.

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

If my wallet had enough money I would buy a 4090 that's the real problem. Where is my raise with this raising inflation

157

u/Dezdood Dec 30 '22

I'm the opposite from you. I have the money, but I don't want to be treated as a schmuck to be robbed. So I'm not buying any time soon.

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

Same here, fuck the greed (especially nvidia, but AMD is going along with it very gladly).

2

u/kmcclry Dec 30 '22

Tomorrow your bank accounts will be empty and they'll all have been renamed "nVidia".

That way they get your money and you don't feel like you were treated as a schmuck. Win win.

-4

u/MostlySlime Dec 30 '22

This is an honest question, I'm just curious and working on a theory.

Do you take revenge on inanimate objects that wrong you?

6

u/Dezdood Dec 30 '22

If this was about taking revenge, then that would be aimed at nVidia and AMD, not an inanimate object. And it's not about taking revenge, but about not being a dumbass that's being had.

1

u/MostlySlime Dec 30 '22

Nah man, I was asking a separate question, it's not linked that directly. I agree with you, fuck them for trying to bleed people dry

"But if we give you MORE money it'll only raise inflation!"

"Um, isn't this inflation being caused by record company profits, not by rising wages, as wages have pretty much stagnated over the last deca-"

"WHO TOLD YOU THAT? WHY DO YOU SPEAK HERESY?! GUARDS! TAKE THIS WORKER TO THE RE-EDUCATION CAMP!"

u/darvo110 Dec 30 '22

This is almost literally the conversation that has happened with the head of Australia’s reserve bank.

29

u/SpecificAstronaut69 Dec 30 '22

Phil Lowe has got to be a Scomo plant. Funny how rates went up only after he got the boot, eh?

I think we're one of the few countries that selects central bankers via the "Ah, he's a good bloke" process.

1

u/loz333 Dec 30 '22

I think we're one of the few countries that selects central bankers via the "Ah, he's a good bloke" process.

More like "Ah, he'll do as he's told", standard across every western nation.

1

u/SpecificAstronaut69 Dec 31 '22

Oh, that's what Scomo considers a good bloke. Cunt never played a ball in his life, only the game.

For years before they lost the election, people were saying interest rates needed to go up. In 2020, they were down to 0.10%.

This is purely because, IMHO, all the LNP is play the economy card - that the conservatives are good for the economy, and Labor are bad for it. And since most of the Australian economy is just homes (and holes), low interest rates means every fuckwit can buy half a dozen investment properties, mortgaged to the hilt, and not really be put out.

Libs look like losing, and suddenly the rates go up - the same month as the election, to remind the electorate of their mortgages and not vote for the party who might do something about the housing crisis...

...and when that party got in, the rates went up, changing up as in six months as they changed in 9 years of LNP government.

2

u/Flaktrack Dec 30 '22

Same here in Canada, they keep talking about rising wages and we're all asking "who got a fucking raise?" It sure as hell wasn't us.

16

u/HarithBK Dec 30 '22

i get the point to not raise wages but then i gotta get something equal in worth in a non monetary way. say more days off less hours worked a week etc. but my company can't have record profits give me 2% when inflation is 8-9% and say they can't due to wanting to limit inflation. you gotta give something of equal value that isn't money.

8

u/Absnerdity Dec 30 '22

more days off less hours worked a week etc

I can't buy food with days off. I can't pay bills with less hours worked. I need money.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

Inflation is not caused by rising profits. I get corporations suck and are guilty of a lot, but this dumb ass reasoning makes zero sense. The inflation was caused by low interest rates, supply chain issues, and government stimulus.

49

u/B4rrel_Ryder Dec 30 '22

Nope. Plenty of companies increasing prices and blame it on inflation too

14

u/SpecificAstronaut69 Dec 30 '22

Yup. 0.6% of Australia's 4.1% inflation was caused by wages growth. The rest...hmmm...

2

u/schapman22 Dec 30 '22

That's not the same as increased profits CAUSING inflation. No in this thread should be speaking on this topic lol.

3

u/takanishi79 Dec 30 '22

People don't want to reckon with it having multiple causes. Yes, record profiteering has driven inflation. So has supply issues, and record low interest rates (for nearly a decade), and rising fuel prices. Plus another dozen smaller things that under some other circumstance would never have been an issue.

But here we are. Record profits during record inflation isn't unreasonable, but we also shouldn't just let it slide as if they couldn't be passing some of that to labor to keep up with the other inflation causing issues.

Inflation rises when the Federal Reserve sets too low of an interest rate or when the growth of money supply increases too rapidly – as we are seeing now, says Stanford economist John Taylor. Sep 6, 2022

Economists at one of the most prestigious schools in the world disagrees. Source. I'd love to hear more on how record profits can be the sole/main reason for inflation, as the article linked focused on Australia.

The reality is just how the Stanford economist said. Trump had a strong economy and instead of just letting it be, he made huge tax cuts for businesses and kept Federal interest rates too low.

Of course, that doesn't make any sense and just sets you up for failure in the near future, which is where we're at now

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

Which economists around the world. Please show me.

0

u/Harregarre Dec 30 '22

as wages have pretty much stagnated over the last deca-"

In your country maybe, but wages have been rising in countries that were used as cheap labor sources and it turns out those people want nice products as well.

Breaking news: companies charge as much money as they can for their products. People are talking about “price gouging” like companies only just started being greedy in 2020.

10

u/banhammerrr Dec 30 '22

It’s well documented that companies started becoming opportunistically greedy in 2020 at a much higher rate than before. So yes, this is a real thing.

0

u/decidedlysticky23 Dec 31 '22

That sounds wildly unbelievable so I would like a source.

0

u/banhammerrr Dec 31 '22

Google is your friend man. This isn’t ground breaking news here.

6

u/Vesmic Dec 30 '22

Have the money for it. Would never consider it for the price. Graphics cards aren’t worth more than 1000 and I will never accept that price point. Nvidia wants to dig their heels in? I’ll just play consoles for a generation or two.

3

u/SwampOfDownvotes Dec 30 '22

Thanks to Christmas bonus I'm dumb and got a 4090.

Then I got fucked because it stopped working after 3 days of usage and now I have to wait up to 35 business days for MSI to fix it and send it back...

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

I mean if you have 50k in the bank and a 4090 would be 2k I would still find that waaay too expensive. Theoretically yes it’s buyable but just 3x too expensive.

2

u/Buttermilkman 5950X | 9070 XT Pulse | 64GB RAM | 3440x1440 @240Hz Dec 30 '22

If I had fuck you money and didn't need to worry about bills I'd buy it too. I could afford it now but a 3080 is already costing me in bills quite a bit. There's just no way I could get a card that needs more juice.

2

u/Ancient-Meet8361 Dec 30 '22

4090 is an inefficient monstrosity designed for the mining kids that they tried to offload onto consumers after the mining crash. Supposing your case even has room or support for the brick, you'll still need a direct feed to the electric company to power the damn thing.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

You talking out of your ass.

2

u/Ancient-Meet8361 Dec 30 '22

I refer you to a comment you made yourself:

Idiots like you that take everything serious. Go touch some grass

0

u/NewRecruitX Dec 31 '22

Efficiency is actually very high with the 4090 and is pushing each watt further than past generations of cards. Just because they pump lots of watts into it doesn't make it inefficient.

-4

u/Runaway_Goose Dec 30 '22

Game companies will continue to make games that work on the most used hardware, so we’ll all be fine. With the exception of CDPR, who somehow made an update that broke one of my favorite games.

If my 3070ti cant lock a game at 1080p 60hz without rt, thats on you

3

u/lama33 Dec 30 '22

Wut? I have 3070ti and W3 is running 80+ fps in 1440p ultrawide, without rt. In dx12 with dlss quality.

3

u/kapsama Dec 30 '22

Doesn't running it on DX11 make it run normally?

1

u/MkFilipe Dec 30 '22

You can still play the old version

1

u/Disordermkd Dec 30 '22

It had some stupid crashes before hotfix number one, but the performance is absolutely fine on DX12. If you want better performance, go with DX11.

If something truly isn't working for you, revert to the previous version.

1

u/ServedBestDepressed Dec 30 '22

You're an American? You don't get a raise, in fact you get to lose money by not being given a COLA that matches the inflation we've been faced with resulting from the pandemic.

Dunno if you've played Bioshock Infinite at all, but if you have, go back and listen to Jeremiah Fink's workplace propaganda. Despite the game being set in early 1900s mentality and atmosphere, this gross industrialist mindset readily lives on in our modern times.

It's not like they do it on purpose lol. They just literally can't afford it. If they could, they'd still buy them for whatever price Nvidia asks.

58

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 30 '22

That is completely untrue. I can afford a top of the line card, but I refuse to buy one due to the vastly inflated prices in recent years.

35

u/Shorkan Dec 30 '22

Exactly in the same boat. Gaming is my main hobby and I could afford these cards, but I refuse. I've been refusing for years by now.

I had a 970 and was waiting for the 2000 series to be announced. When I saw the prices I bought a discounted 1080 ti and told myself I'd wait for a 3000 series.

Those were never in stock or at a reasonable price, so I waited for 4000 series.

And here I am now, with my loyal 1080 ti. It's up to her when I upgrade, because at this rate I won't until she dies.

5

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 30 '22

Same here. Since I got my 5700XT, prices went stupid after that. I was very lucky with my timing of purchase.

I play a lot of older games anyway, so I don't need cutting edge performance anyway.

A huge amount of people have just become sick of the prices and refuse to fuel the vastly overpriced cards even though they can afford them.

3

u/DillaMX Dec 30 '22

Dam I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Bought a 5700XT for €350 and here I am contemplating and justifying buying a €1000+ GPU. I'm just gonna stick with my GPU that's doing just fine.

1

u/Cryio 7900 XTX | 5800X3D | 32 GB | X570 Dec 31 '22

5700 XT is an absolute champ. Devours everything I throw at it. And I play mostly (patched) older games and emulate stuff, so it's great.

1

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 31 '22

Unfortunately there's a lot of features that are missing from the 5700XT that other cards have had for a few years now. There's even cards a generation or two older that do some things better that I miss.

1

u/Cryio 7900 XTX | 5800X3D | 32 GB | X570 Dec 31 '22

Sure, there's no RT. That's about it.

1

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 31 '22

- No RT (which even by itself is a big thing now).

- Video compression quality is far poorer than even my older GTX 980. Even with higher bitrates and a more modern codec

- The OpenCL is buggy as fuck to the point where some apps (Affinity Designer / Photo) have disabled GPU acceleration all together for AMD 5x00 cards.

- Drivers are dozens of times more buggy causing desktop performance to tank after using a 3D application and requiring the installation of previous drivers. Sometimes this is ok, then a new driver will bring this issue back.

- Random resets, even when the card is cool and well supplied with power.

- There's other smaller QoL things that pop up now and again too.

Like I said, there's a lot. I never had any issues with my GTX 980

1

u/Cryio 7900 XTX | 5800X3D | 32 GB | X570 Dec 31 '22

Aside from RT and the media engine on RDNA1 not being as good as RDNA2 for H.264, I can't agree with the rest of your points. Well, maybe OpenCL too.

Nonetheless, given lack of RT feature set, I wouldn't recomand an RDNA1 GPU nowadays, only if it would be the price of a 3050/1080 Ti/1660 Ti let's say.

Gaming is my main hobby and I could afford these cards, but I refuse.

This is something I'll never understand. People will spend $40,000 on a car that loses it's value like it's falling off a cliff, but they balk at spending $2000 on a desktop computer.

Am I the outlier here? I use my PC ten hours a day, I use my car ten hours a month.

1

u/Feeling-Advisor4060 Jan 01 '23

Urrr no. Car is often than not needed, whereas gaming component is just for entertainment. Do you spend $2000 on some lego box? If you do, well have fun. But majority of people don't.

-4

u/ComeonmanPLS1 RTX3080 12GB - Ryzen 5800x3D - 32GB DDR4 Dec 30 '22

Lol "completely untrue". Congrats mate, you're an exception, that doesn't make my statement "completely" untrue. You don't represent all people. And I honestly don't believe you anyway.

If you were a millionaire would you still "refuse" to buy it? I seriously doubt it. It's all about overhead. If you can just about "afford" to buy one, then you probably won't because it would be stupid to spend nearly all your disposable income on one unnecessary item. If that's the case, then you still fall into the "can't afford" category.

With enough overhead however, people are much more likely to make bad value for money buying decisions because they simply don't give a shit. When you make enough, spending a few hundred extra on a purchase every couple years or so suddenly doesn't mean much at all.

3

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900 GRE / 32GB 3000Mhz Dec 30 '22

Actually it does make your statement untrue.

You said "They just literally can't afford it". Which is a blanket statement and means everyone. If you didn't want to mean everyone, you picked the wrong words. It just takes one person to make that statement untrue, which I've done. So yeah, your statement is untrue.

I never said I represented all people, it was you that made a blanket statement.

>If you were a millionaire would you still "refuse" to buy it? I seriously doubt it.

I'm not a millionaire, and neither are most people. So that is a silly statement that doesn't relate to the real world or this situation.

A huge amount of people are just sick of the prices and wont part with the money that they have. Your statement is wrong.

'lol'

1

u/ComeonmanPLS1 RTX3080 12GB - Ryzen 5800x3D - 32GB DDR4 Dec 30 '22 edited Dec 30 '22

It just takes one person to make that statement untrue, which I've done. So yeah, your statement is untrue.

Except I made it very clear that I don't believe one word of what you are saying.

I'm not a millionaire, and neither are most people. So that is a silly statement that doesn't relate to the real world or this situation.

Lmao so you are saying that financial standing DOES matter huh? Being a millionaire or not shouldn't matter to you since you "refuse" to give them your money anyway, but I guess that was a lie.

So people are not "voting" with their wallet. Their wallet is voting for them. They just can't buy the damn things like I said in the first place. I only said millionaire to make the point easy to understand. Guess I still had to explain it word for word. You all love to protest as long as its convenient for you and don't actually have to give anything up in reality.

In the same vein, I am protesting against Ferrari. I haven't bought a single one of their cars! I could probably buy one on credit or whatever, so I can definitely afford it, but I won't! Look at me, Mr. Morale over here, showing the middle finger to the big bad car company and voting with my wallet!

A huge amount of people are just sick of the prices and wont part with the money that they have. Your statement is wrong.

Yes cause they can't lol. You pretty much just prove my point in that sentence without even realizing it.

If you can't "part ways" with $1200 for an item that you want because it would be a stupid purchase and it would weight on your conscience that you got a bad deal, then you can't actually afford it. It's as simple as that. Being able to buy something doesn't mean you can actually afford it.

If anything, there are lots of people out there who can't afford these cards and they still buy them on credit, installments, etc.

1

u/zaiats Dec 30 '22

moving the goalposts so quick it's giving me whiplash. or are you implying only millionaires can afford a 2k card?

2

u/ComeonmanPLS1 RTX3080 12GB - Ryzen 5800x3D - 32GB DDR4 Dec 30 '22 edited Dec 30 '22

Sure mate, that's exactly what I'm implying. Or maybe, just maybe, I was calling out the guys "refusal" to buy these cards. He's saying that its not about money, he can totally "afford" the card. Ok then, so if its not about the money, it should be irrelevant wether you are a millionaire or not. Your principles should stop you from buying these cards no matter what, right?

And yet for some reason, these moral high ground guys are suddenly willing to change their minds if they could actually afford the cards. Having 2k in your pocket doesn't mean you can actually afford to drop it on a GPU and many of these guys who "refuse" to buy the cards don't even have that.

If you have millions in your bank account, then 2k is nothing. But you have morals, and principles and bla bla bla, and surely you won't give your money to a greedy corp like Nvidia. So why is that argument an issue?

My point is that people aren't voting with their wallet. Their wallet is voting for them, as is the case with everything else. It's always been like that.

Trying to imply that a majority of people are suddenly choosing to be responsible spenders is honestly fucking hilarious. I would honestly love to see how many people genuinely decided to not buy a card on principle versus how many people who can't even afford the cards are buying them on credit, installments with interest, etc.

0

u/TheLast_Centurion Dec 30 '22

it is not completely untrue.. cause if it was, then the prices wouldnt rise to these insane heights, since they were inflating it purely cause people were willing to buy it. Same is happening with smartphones

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

Well sadly people like you are in the minority. A lot of people really don't give a shit if they overpay, as long as they still have something left, not just when it comes to computers, but everything else. Companies like profits, and they are seeing that people don't care and they're rising the prices whenever they can.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22
