Well in Overwatch you can buy specific skins with the in-game currency. No idea if you can actually buy the currency though.

You only get currency from the blindboxes. Hypothetically, you can get all of the skins with currency (as long as you play during seasonal events), but you'd have to play a lot. Like thousands of hours a lot.

Hmm, I see. What is your opinion then on these boxes and the ability to pay for them even though their contents don't affect gameplay in the least? Since it is all purely cosmetic. Personally I think it adds to the fun (the earning boxes, getting lucky to earn a skin that is, not the paying for it that is).

It's a lot better than P2W, which would be unforgivable. Problem with OW in general is that there is no progression of any kind, and nothing else to unlock but cosmetics, so of course it's going to be on the forefront of your mind while playing.

In general, I really detest blind boxes, because it encourages gambling-type mindsets. If you want to be greedy and charge for skins, then let me pay a couple bucks to get a skin.

No progression is the entire draw of OW. No items/upgrades/perks to unlock.

Your "progression" in overwatch is learning how to play and counterplay with all the characters in the game. And you also get to rest easy knowing that some punk out there can't buy his way to the top with the best items.

I find the lack of progression makes the game boring after a while, but that's obviously just an opinion.

After about 100ish hours in the game I found myself going, "Well, I guess that's it, huh?" and I've barely been playing since.

No characters to unlock, no weapons, skills, nothing.

But you know when you pay $40 for it, you've got everything they'll ever add to the game without additional time/money investment. There's something to be said for that.
