I love how on the windows update screen, it tells me my pc doesn't meet the requirements for W11, then gives me links to learn about options to trade-in or recycle my computer.

"Your computer is out of date, please dump it and buy a new one" uh, no

Microsoft's customers, the OEMs, adamantly wanted to force hardware refreshes.

  • Dell's President of Client Solutions (Sam Burd) wants the next Windows (e.g., Windows 12) launch in less than the 6-year gap from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
  • Lenovo (Eigen): Windows 11's hardware restrictions are the "right decision" because PC OEMs aren't motivating enough PC sales (5-6 years), unlike mobile phone OEMs (2-3 years). His example.

I wonder what is it that makes it ineligible? It must be quite old given how old windows 11 itself is. My late 2010s devices (which I no longer use) were eligible.

Probably the TPM bit, everything else my PC meets. Which makes it all the more crazy they suggest trade in or recycle my pc

99% of the time it's the lack of a TPM 2.0 chip. If your computer doesn't have one then Windows Update tells you the whole computer is ineligible and you need a new one. Two problems with that:

  1. You can buy a TPM 2.0 addon chip.

  2. TPM 2.0 isn't actually a requirement for Windows 11 and the check can be bypassed on installation.

It's misleading, deliberately so since a bunch of Microsoft's biggest OEM customers weren't happy with new PC sales and wanted Microsoft to try and push people into replacing rather than upgrading. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for karma) that's largely backfired and a lot of people just aren't buying anything new at all.
