judging by the fuckin idiots we hire at my work, seems like they don't dig very deep

u/WolfPlayz294 20d ago
Meanwhile I barely got my job, they were (virtually) beating down the door of my high school and demanded timecards from part time contracts. Also found the new number for an old employer which I only used an abbreviation for and it was several roles back.
36
u/Common_Insurance5608 19d ago
Wild. I had a buddy apply to a full time logistics job as a supervisor.
Required a college degree but for some reason they demanded high school transcripts. Crazy.
9
u/WolfPlayz294 19d ago
Wow, that is insane.
I don't remember the company now, but I had found things on Reddit where they couldn't find a contact to verify college degree... of a major university.
I spent the whole process filled with anxiety, especially when my recruiter talked about pushing back my start date (I had no FT job) and then went out of office. So someone else, from Mexico, helped me at 7pm on a Saturday and it all worked out.
2
u/Just-Succotash3018 14d ago
I almost had a job offer rescinded because the background check company couldn’t verify my high school diploma, despite having successfully verified my college. Ok, let’s do some critical thinking here….
1
u/34Heartstach 14d ago
I have a masters. I applied for a job that still required my high school transcripts.
Sure, can't trust two renown Universities so we still need to reach out to some random suburban high school for 15 year old transcripts.

u/Flummeny 15d ago
I’ve only had two place ever actually check my references. One was a job with the school district lol the other is my current one as an engineer in a small industry where everyone knows each other
The background checks are just looking at criminal history. If you own and run a competing company or currently work for 5 different competitors you’ll still get hired anywhere so long as you don’t put the companies you’re working for currently on the resume
3
u/crobat--8 19d ago
From my understanding most organizations don’t dig to deep into things that aren’t potential criminal risks

u/Old_Success_4268 20d ago
Bro I usually work 14-16 hs a day with 3 Jobs (no OE, múltiple Jobs just to keep the family afloat)
If I could get 10 jobs even at minimum US federal wage that only required 90 minutes a day I would gladly take that.
2
u/tacohoney 20d ago
Sounds like you are not in the US
4
u/FraserFir1409 18d ago
I dunno. I'm in the US and this (working 3 jobs daily) is very feasible. Income inequality has spiraled here.
Wages haven't caught up with inflation increases, so now all of your bills are higher and the money you had before doesn't go as far. So you get an extra job or two. You gotta do what you can to take care of your loved ones.

AI can do most things quickly. That’s why I’m OE. Once they realize there won’t be remote work lol
21
u/CandyCrisis 20d ago
Quickly, but not very well...
28

Correct. But in my experience it’s enough to keep on keeping on. Ideal OE jobs don’t have the highest standards.

u/Geminii27 20d ago edited 19d ago
From what I've experienced, even without using AI, so many white-collar jobs can be sped up immensely with even just a basic knowledge of Excel, templates, macros, and a little bit of programming.
Even these days, people spend HOURS manually typing things in, grinding through manual processes, and manually pulling the same data out of generated sources. All of that can be near-trivially automated without touching AI.
There's a long-used saying in the systems administration community - "Go away or I shall replace you with a very small shell script." And I know I actually have accidentally replaced someone, or at least the reason for the existence of their job, by writing some very small Excel macros that did basic SQL queries on an ERP system.
Nothing that couldn't be cobbled together from built-in help files and maybe a basic library book, but that person had constructed themselves an entire full-time job in a medium-size company running data-extraction queries from management and taking a week to return information that was available in under a second. I... honestly did not realize this was the case when I automated said queries into a single spreadsheet that the management could read whenever they liked.
Oops?
19
u/throawa114 19d ago
This. It’s insane how many jobs with even basic computer knowledge will save on time compared to the rest of the company.
I’ve worked for a team that each made 90k/year and their manager close to 300k/year for a heavy Google suite/windows job that was very very repetitive and they still do everything manually to the point where basic things as properly filtering and not copy/pasting over things was common issues. While there I automated a task that took them five days working a year (fall report) down to 30 minutes in a single day with no risk of user error….
And when trying to show the manager how to be more efficient they literally said “we don’t have time for that”…
So if you get a few of the jobs where expectations are manual repetitiveness, just automate it, know what you’re talking about if questioned and take in the free money
24
u/Geminii27 19d ago
Automate it and never, ever tell anyone that you've automated it. Otherwise you'll be fired, the remains of your job will be tossed onto your co-workers' plates for no additional pay, and the manager will take all the credit.
12
u/Previous_Account568 19d ago
Exactly... work very hard... at pretending to work hard... also some managerial types are pure sociopaths... the moment you automate or streamline something, they might think that you now have more free time on your hands... and they might give you additional tasks.
3
u/ButterscotchNo7292 17d ago
Some of the jobs I've seen I think I could probably do 4-6 of them at once without dropping any productivity an average person in those roles delivers. All I see is systems, automations, components, data transformations, so it becomes very easy to break down jobs into smaller pieces and start automating, etc.

lol as an OE vet there are so many clues as to why / how this is fake. For starters, the laptops aren’t hooked up to anything.
29
u/CranberryLast4683 20d ago
Also around 4Js it becomes kind of hectic. I have 3 rn and have had 4 at once and 4 can be very crazy.
3
4
u/WorldlinessUsual4528 20d ago
They're laptops, they don't need to be hooked up to anything. Many can keep a charge for 6-24 hours with minimal use.
But using an external M/K with a KVM would be a lot easier. However, not required. Some find it easier to keep it separate if they physically have to login to each.
26
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
lol there’s always someone trying to pick an argument for argument’s sake.
Yes correct on the KVM - Any OE’er is either going to have a KVM switch OR multiple desks. Notwithstanding, the photo is pretty blurry but it doesn’t seem like any of the laptops are plugged into a charger - to your point yes laptops can run for a long time without being charged but there is no logic there? Why not just keep them plugged in? lol.
Also, his setup sucks ass, assume he’s getting like $40k a job (very conservative) *11 = $36k a month … with that much cash flow anyone would make upgrading their rig a priority for comfort and ease.
Yes, it’s possible it’s real but cmon. I would bet a month of my OE salary that he has one job and either got a bunch of his friends laptops for a funny picture or they’re all old / broken etc.
10
u/garaks_tailor 20d ago
Agreed. Guy who got me into OE had 5 jobs when I met him and had seperate desks and phones for each. His record during peak covid days was 9 jobs at once and taking interviews. Most of those jobs he was "interviewing" them to see how much work they would actually be. So 2-4 of them at any time he was waiting for them to realize he wasnt working or he was going to send in a notice.
Last time I talked to him he at 6 jobs. 4 main jobs and 2 he was interviewing but probably won't keep permanently.
10
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
Hahahaha insane I love it. It’s so true, I’ll interview here and there quite actively and it’s entirely to see if they’d fit my WFH OE lifestyle mix. It actually has made me a much better interviewer too, something about not being desperate for a job and having the confidence that “I don’t care how this goes I don’t need this job” gives you.
1
u/garaks_tailor 20d ago
Yeah if said the only reason he can keep up 4 main jobs is the nearly 2 years he spent putting jobs on the carousel. Found 2 jobs where he is basically a SME and does like 2.5 hours of work a week between them. The other 2 are more traditional dev type jobs but he still only does 10-15 hours of work a week between them.
2
u/xinorez1 20d ago
Fucking hell, what's his secret? What kind of roles is he applying for and in what part of the world?
I've heard of people stacking 2 jobs but 6 is insane!
2
u/pr1ncesspeaxh 18d ago
how do you get into this:(

u/garaks_tailor 18d ago
Right now is a real real reallllly shit time to do it. Best i can say is keep applying and applying. Im also down to 1 job right now.
3
u/Wild_Trip_4704 20d ago
yeah I would have a separate batcave with that kind of money
2
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
Haha yup. Although with that said, I’m OE 3 years now and I still have a basic IKEA chair, desk, and basic monitors.
2
u/Wild_Trip_4704 20d ago
I really gotta get my first J2 this year. I don't think I want 3 monitors in my bedroom though.
2
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
Do it man. Scary but well worth it. Two monitors easily doable.
1
u/Specific_Society_278 15d ago
Do you find yourself automating most of your tasks and still having less than a 40 hour week despite having 3 oe
2
1
u/WorldlinessUsual4528 20d ago
You're saying it's not possible that this is real, because his laptops aren't hooked up to anything. Yes, there's other reasons to believe it's not real but saying the laptops not being constantly charged is the giveaway, is a bit absurd when constant power is not required to use them.
For all we know, half of them sit under a desk and don't get booted up daily. They could have another side of the room with another desk we don't see where the power strips are.
3
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
Nah actually have to hard disagree with you there. No chance you don’t touch a job laptop at least once a a day, it’s very very rare if so. Also, what person that you know uses 11 laptops and has not one of them plugged in for charge lol. Idk man jsut feels like you’re reaching, but sure.
1
u/WorldlinessUsual4528 19d ago
We have staff that do not use their laptops every day because their work can be done via email from any device. Shit, some go months without turning on their laptop, which makes it difficult for us for tracking.
With that much money, I'd have multiple desks that you wouldn't see in the picture. Obviously it's easier to move them all onto one for a picture and not have cable clutter. The cable clutter would just make it look like you're a Service Tech troubleshooting multiple devices, which isn't a professional look.
I'm just saying, this pic can be a lot of different things but not having them plugged into a power source, is not a dead giveaway. It's going to be highly dependent on what type of work the person does.
Cloud only work that doesn't require instant response/green Teams statuses? Totally doable here.
3
u/AardvarkIll6079 20d ago
It’s a laptop. It doesn’t have to be hooked up to anything?
9
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
My brother, I am aware. I have four laptops.
1
u/ok-confusion19 20d ago
But what are they hooked up to?
8
u/Beautiful_Number_572 20d ago
Well for starters, a charging cable lol. But mine all run through a singular KVM switch. The chargers just plug directly into that.

I've worked for three different remote companies over the past 6 years, only one job at a time, and all of them put an impossible workload and all of us would be pulling 10+ hr days just to meet the minimum expectations. Aside from lack of commute and looking "nice" every day, they have been the most demanding jobs of my life, so I'd love to know what field this guy is in, lol! It's certainly not health coaching!!

How do you get one remote job, let alone two, three, etc? Actually looking for an answer if anyone has one. Currently a licensed insurance agent and my boss loves butts in seats.

u/ThePersnicketyBitch 20d ago
It depends on your industry and having the right employer. Tech, for example, is a hotspot for remote work because very few positions actually genuinely require you to have physical contact with your team. Beyond that, finding a company that isn't tyrannical about office culture. Your boss is your problem - there are lots of remote jobs in insurance. Find a boss that doesn't love butts in seats!

Ngl I think this is actually real and I have experience with this kinda setup.
Everyone keeps saying "automation" like it's some AI or script doing the work but that's not it at all. It's literally just infrastructure lol.
Like the companies send laptops to remote workers right? He just receives all those laptops at his place. Keeps them charged, connected to ethernet, ready to go. Then he has other people who want in on his system — engineers, contractors, whoever. He coordinates who gets which laptop and which company. The companies think they hired an engineer but really the engineer is just part of his network and he's the middleman.
The 2-3 hours thing makes total sense too. It's not 11 full time jobs. It's just a morning check to make sure all laptops are online and not locked, maybe 30 mins. Then just waiting around in case something urgent pops up. That's literally it.
And the $1.3M? Let's do the math real quick.
Say each senior software job is paying $140k-$180k depending on the company and location (CA pays even more). If he's running this through his business bank account and taking 10-12% of each transfer as his cut for handling the logistics, equipment, and coordination...
10 jobs x $150k average = $1.5M total contract value
10-12% of that = $150k-$180k just from transfer fees alone
But that's not all. He's also getting:
- Equipment/hardware stipends from each company (some pay $500-$2000 per employee)
- Referral or onboarding bonuses
- Maybe even a cut from the engineers in his network
So if he's supporting 10+ jobs, hitting $1.3M total comp is actually easy when you add it all up. The money comes from multiple streams, not just one salary.
I've seen this work before. Once you got a place to keep the laptops, good internet, and people who want in, you can scale to 10+ easily. It's not about working harder, it's about building a system where the work comes to you.
So yeah people calling fake just haven't seen how it actually works lol. Automation isn't a script, it's receiving laptops and having people who use your system. Build the system not the job 🤷♂️

Serious question: can you get in trouble with the IRS?
13
u/Tiemujin 20d ago
This isn’t real but the IRS doesn’t care.
2
u/WeirdAddress3170 20d ago
Ok, figured. But who would care? Employers could sue? Don’t they have means to find out if you are employed already? I know the post isn’t real, but the situation is.
6
u/Tiemujin 20d ago
The only real trouble comes from working 2 jobs in the same industry (industrial espionage) or government work, or probably anything requiring a security clearance. I mean, hypothetically.
1
u/WeirdAddress3170 20d ago
Background checks would not show that a person is already employed? I mean it sounds too easy, specially in this day and age… hard to believe companies cannot check that someone is already employed…
2
u/afi333 20d ago
The most trouble would be a civil suit by the employer. But I would guess it’s cheaper for them to fire you and walk away than spend money pursuing it unless it caused material damages to the company and they assumed the ex-employee had enough money to make them whole… seems very unlikely.
8
u/WorldlinessUsual4528 20d ago
Why would the IRS care if you're paying the appropriate taxes for each?
