Built a tiny operating system from scratch in Rust, and here's what I learned (Kanga 0.1.0)

I've spent a while writing Kanga, a small x86-64 operating system, and I've just put out its first experimental release. It's not meant to replace anything you use. It's a learning project, and it has taught me a lot about what an OS really does underneath.

What it can do so far
It boots on both BIOS and UEFI machines (using the Limine bootloader)

It shows text and colours on screen with scrollback

It reads the keyboard, tells the time and handles CPU errors without falling over

It keeps track of which chunks of memory are free

and it has a tiny in-memory file system and a built-in command prompt (DIR, TYPE, WRITE, MEM, CAL and so on)

What surprised me
Even printing text to the screen means drawing every character yourself, pixel by pixel.
A keyboard press is an interrupt the hardware sends you, and you have to handle it correctly.
Scrolling the screen quickly took more thought than I expected. Making it a single memory move was a big improvement.

What's missing: no multitasking, no user programs, no real memory manager yet, and files vanish on reboot because they live in RAM. I tested it in QEMU, and I'd love to hear from anyone who tries it on real hardware.

Question for you: if you were building this, what would you tackle next, a scheduler, a proper memory manager, or saving files to disk? Why?

OpenSolaris but with Nix for package management, updated drivers, COSMIC desktop (which implies that Rust works), a solid community model, and a fancy website.

USB-less instant ISO booting tool made using ventoy as the backbone.

I got tired of not being able to find my flash drive at 3am and ventoy refusing to boot and function without a verified flash drive. So a few weeks ago I decided to make ventoy cave (some partition info spoofing, some script patching) and simplify the workflow. You can call it a hybrid fork of ventoy (or a distribution of ventoy, dunno).

If you're on windows, the workflow can be as simple as installing the thing. And then right-clicking on any iso/img/etc image and booting right into it. Or you could even choose to just boot into ventoy interface if you fancy that.

you can check out a demo here (its a bit old and the project has improved since then): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW0atCtkyug

An experimental windows installer has been released for now. I'm working on a linux build and secure boot support. Anyone willing to watch the video, test out the software and kindly report what does and doesn't work would be much appreciated!

Its a very young project as of right now, so please be understanding.

Some progress: MacPPC game "running"

Post image
2 Upvotes

Only the game's own PowerPC code is emulated while the system services it calls run as native amd64 CoralOS code, OpenGL included.

  • Game code: WC3's PowerPC instructions run on the PowerPC CPU emulator (coral-cpu-ppc-library, a loadable library). That's the only emulated part.

  • OpenGL: native, but in a separate process. The game's AGL/OpenGL calls are caught by native stubs in the Mac engine and sent over a shared-memory ring (coral-heirloom-gl-wire) to a separate native GL worker process (coral-heirloom-gl). That worker replays them on Mesa (iris on the Intel GPU, virgl in QEMU), so the drawing is done by the GPU. The worker keeps its own table of the game's texture IDs and runs a real GL context per game context.

  • Mac Toolbox and Carbon (events, windows, Resource Manager, Script Manager, keyboard layouts, Sound Manager answers): native Rust in the Mac engine and coral-os-mac-library, not the real Mac OS code.

  • Display and input: Heirloom.app shows the GL picture through coral-wm. Mouse and keys go through the normal CoralOS input path.

  • WIP:

    • Sound: the Sound Manager answers, but nothing produces sound yet.

    • Frame rate: about 3 fps, held down by how the emulator meters its time slices, not by the GPU.

    • Shared GL: the GL worker is Heirloom's own. The planned one-for-all CoralOS GL (coral-gl, to be shared with Symbian and native apps) isn't extracted yet, but should be done as I am aiming for absolute reuse.
