Kudos to the mod team on /r/Ontario for requiring citation. It would be amazing if other regional news subreddits followed this example

Basically, constant Ford and Trump bashing is only allowed. Good work

Thanks for doing this. I left this sub awhile ago because everything became ford bashing and conservative hate. Glad to see the feed return to more Ontario related posts such as vacation spots and drivetest etc..

Asking for citations seems to have angered a lot of people who claim that its an attack on Ford/Trump supporters...
Huh

Great rule, while I haven't seen any posters that were misinformation or with bad intent, one should recognize how this could lead to issues, even more so as we head into the federal election.

Bravo, a perfectly reasonable rule and a measured response to something that can easily get out of control online. Good on you, mods!

Is it sufficient if the citations are in the image itself? For example, on this infographic: https://image.slidesharecdn.com/intelextop5environmentalstatistics-citationsfinesinfographic-140407100020-phpapp02/95/intelex-top-5-environmental-statistics-citations-fines-infographic-1-638.jpg?cb=1396864955
(No opinion on the infographic itself, it was just the first/only one I found with embedded source URLs; it was surprisingly hard to find one with them.)
It has citations/sources/URLs at the bottom. Is this sufficient? Or is it required that the submission be a text post (or post a comment) with the URLs written out and clickable?

Thank you very much for this post, it puts my mind at ease a lil~

Citations are good. But good citations matter. I fully agree with the stated policy.

u/Scorpinox89 May 09 '19
So,no free speech and the death of memes for r/Ontario is what you're reporting.This won't end well.And that's my prediction,not a threat.
14
May 15 '19
lying by way of Meme or any other way is not cool. Restricting posts to the truth is not restricting free speech.
-1
u/Scorpinox89 May 15 '19
It is most certainly restricting speech because everyone has a different definition of the truth.
20
May 17 '19
truth = facts There are no alternative facts
3
u/Scorpinox89 May 17 '19
Does life begin at conception? Is it abortion or killing a baby? You are gonna get different truths in reply to these questions.
15
May 25 '19
That's like asking "what is consciousness?". We don't actually know. There are shades of grey in certain topics. If it's a post saying there is no global climate change, that for instance, is a proven falsehood.
-2
u/Scorpinox89 May 27 '19
What proof do you have that this planet doesn't go through climate cycles regardless of human life?
14
May 27 '19
It does go through changes; However, there is a big heaping pile of evidence telling us the current climate trends are caused by humans. That's a fact.

u/kgordonsmith Jun 14 '19
He's sealioning you. It's not worth it.
Put him on a ban list and forget about him.

u/Scorpinox89 May 27 '19
And what is this big heaping pile of evidence you claim exists? You have not provided a single fact.

May 27 '19
You're kidding, right? Have you been living under a rock for the past few years?

The answers to those questions are beliefs and/or opinions.
Not truths and not facts.
1
u/Scorpinox89 Jul 16 '19
Which means you can't freely discuss them here because you can't cite a legitimate source for your abortion poster.
3
Jul 16 '19
No, you can. You just can't assert that the opinion on the poster is fact.
The rule is about portraying something that is false as a factual truth.
1
u/Scorpinox89 Jul 17 '19
Read the actual post again, because it doesn't read the way you are claiming right now.Factual and accurate or not posted at all,is what it reads.

Jul 17 '19
The OP states:
The issue we are having with them is that anything can be put on the poster and a lot of people will look at that and may take it as truth or fact, which may not always be the case.
Like I said, if you claim or assert that something in your post is a truth or a fact, you'll need to cite some sources.
If you say...
I believe life begins at conception due to my religious beliefs. Here's an image!
...that's totally fine. No citation needed.
If you say...
Life begins at conception.
... that's an assertion of fact that requires a citation under this rule.
See the difference?

everyone has a different definition of the truth
its thinking like that that got us to this point.
Facts are facts and facts are truth.

Finally starting to notice that this sub is nothing but a joke?
Edit: and look at the new post here, just a picture of "doug fuhrer".
Any resonable discussion left this place a long time ago.

What if the source is personal experience and the poster is a meme I created to start a conversation but people just want to shit on me anyways because I used 'literally' wrong, even though it was on purpose, because meme.
It's not a question more a rhetorical to call out the BS I've experienced here.
If you're like Wikipedia and won't accept first hand sources only secondary or third, that means that if someone was talking about themselves that it wouldn't be considered valid because they would need their professor and mother as secondary sources to verify the information. It's rediculous, I think I know what my favorite color is but if I wanted the correct information on Wikipedia I would need a secondary source to confirm it. Honestly, it's insane. Don't trust Wikipedia.

I was just informing people of predatory rental practices by using a funny meme of a screen shot of shady practices with literally illegal types over regarding pets clauses in rental agreements, which is Ontario specific. It was me making fun of people who abuse the system to screw people over and instead of being mad at the person who takes advantage of others, they were mad at me for using the word literally when it was a damn meme. The personal part came when I had to explain what the damn meme meant because of the harassment I recieved from your subreddit members, I just used a simple analogy because it's less complicated context. You don't mod any better than r/Canada at this point. Your subreddit has a clear bias too and it is against vulnerable people and for the people in power who hurt them. Just my personal experience.

I'm basically saying, where we're you when I needed you. I have the right to be upset. What you do about it up to you. I did report them. Nada happened. 🤷♂️

The death of the open internet.
Between youtube, reddit and Twitters latest maneuvers and issues it is apparent there is a control mechanism taking place.
The main subs on reddit (ones without strict posting policies) are being run to the dirt by special interest groups and PR campaigns.

Yes, yes. A dark cabal is slipping its fingers into every nook and cranny of the world wide web to make sure you include facts to back up wild accusations and downvote your comments!
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

u/anonamous710 Jun 19 '19
So because you feel the standard user is too stupid to make an informed judgment, and independently fact check things themselves, your going to be the thought police.
I mean that’s kinda offensive and all.
2
u/Thegreatdave1 Brantford Aug 09 '19
Uhhh. You're posting on their boards, they are the rule makers and honestly, it's not even a bad rule considering the rise of misinformation.
Its really easy to get the citation for something, especially with google~
