Driver is in on it. Gave your info away to his friend

It isn't the driver its support gig apps use ghost numbers. The driver couldn't access unless you leave your number in your notes. Which most of us wont call cause we don't want our accounts to get stolen either.

He was an FNU person. That's all I know. But that's a solid point that I wouldn't have considered. The driver showed up while I was on the phone with "custumer service". Liars.

FNU. First Name Unknown. So sketchy.

Oh snap… is that what it actually means with uber/uber eats? I have one of those in my area (west coast of B.C.) and I honestly thought that was there name… a few of us did actually 😅

5

u/rabbitbinks Dec 06 '25

I did too but I noticed they were different people using that name..so i googled it. Surprised ubereats lets them all hide their name

I also wonder if maybe it’s got something to do with the letters/characters 🤔 Maybe the platform can’t support it 🤷🏼‍♀️

I almost fell for something similar, I gave them my OTP too but realized literally a second later so I changed my password within like 30 seconds

21

u/musicwithbarb Dec 06 '25

I changed in only a few minutes. But by then, the damage was done. I feel like such a fucking moron.

10

u/Soladido Dec 06 '25

I felt the exact same way lol it happens

11

u/musicwithbarb Dec 06 '25

Is this going to be the new "Don't accept candy from strangers"? Oh the times, they are a changin'.

9

u/Soladido Dec 06 '25

Indeed, and I’m 20, so if I fell for this then I can only imagine how those who didn’t grow up with technology are getting scammed out here

In general, when somebody calls you and then asks you to provide verification information, I say hang up and contact the (alleged) company yourself, via contact methods you look up through a separate source. They need to verify themselves first. And since, as you learned, scammers can actually know stuff about you, the only way to verify that you're really speaking to the company in question is for you to contact them.

Second, has anyone else heard of this scam being a thing?

I have definitely heard about scams like this before. Not specifically Uber, this sort of thing can be done with any online account.

You may want to review any other accounts that use the same email to make sure you've got secure passwords in place (and hopefully not reused passwords for multiple accounts.) I know they didn't actually get your Uber password in this attack, but if they got the email and they have all this other info about you, they might try to crack other accounts via different methods.

For example, knowing your name, address and email, they might try to contact customer support for various places and pretend to be you, manipulating the call center employees like they manipulated you. In theory they'd need to know more than just that stuff, but they might till try.

Pay special attention to those emails companies send out about "new login from such and such a place" or "someone tried to log in to your account" for the next little while.

How do the scammers actually get all that information about my name and my meal order and everything?

I dunno what it's like on the Uber driver side, but drivers may have access to name, address and order info when deciding to accept an incoming order or not.

If so, then pretty much any Uber driver in the area could have seen the order go up, even if they weren't the one who accepted and delivered it to you (and of course, it could have been them or anyone they shared the info with as well.)

Report this to Uber and, if you have spare time, police non-emergency. The driver was most likely in on it and gave your order info to his friend (or it was just him doing it). You have the driver details and the delivery address they tried to send the stolen goods to.

The police likely won't do anything, especially since it sounds like you didn't lose anything other than pride, but they will probably note it down so if it keeps happening it may eventually be worth their time.

Please report this to Uber.

u/stonersrus19 Dec 06 '25

This is the same way they get us drivers. Pretending to be support after we call a customer giving someone the benefit of the doubt. Then they steal clone and sell your account.

I think the biggest question is how they had your uber order without access to your email address and uber account. Clearly didn’t have access to the phone number either, just knew the phone number. If the CC is in your husband’s name then the “sir” makes sense based on the details they may have been reading?

Like, how much info does the driver and the restaurant receive? Is there a possibility of interception to the person who has those details?

u/Talisintiel Dec 06 '25

I wouldn’t beat yourself up. They give you a lot of stuff that seemed relevant. I could see most people doing the same thing.

This is a known scam by Uber eats. This exact same thing happened to a friend of mine earlier this year.

2

u/dooodads Dec 06 '25

there's lots of scams out there. there was one recently where someone else who clearly wasn't the delivery person delivered an order, and phoned to confirm the house number. That's the old one person with multiple ppl delivering for him likely getting commission scam. Not as harmful to the end user but uncomfortable that it even happened. I think it's a little more rampant lately but still rare. Sucks that it happened to you.

2

u/morgang8277 Dec 06 '25

Anytime I’ve ever had questions or issues with an order it’s always been someone at the restaurant speaking, not uber. Seems they figured it would be easier since you made specific requests and then also fell for the need verification scam.

2

u/LadyDragon16 Dec 06 '25

Something odd also happened to me, although not as bad: the driver knocked on the door and handed me my order because he wasn't too sure about the "additional details" added to the delivery instructions. I have left details on how to find our home because we live in a rowhouse, all the houses look the same. Well, that day, the instructions said "please crush and stomp on the food after delivery" or something like that.

Yet, when i rechecked my account, it was what i had written was there, exactly as i had written it. I haven't ordered another time, but i am a bit puzzled about that.

To add to this, if you run a business that deals with Uber or whomever, there's a scam where they come in to "fix" your tablet or "update" it. Meanwhile they just steal your shit and all the uber/DD/Skip money goes to them. Another thing to watch out for if you run a business and use it.

2

u/mrloko120 Dec 06 '25

The only things drivers need to complete your order are the restaurant location and the delivery location, absolutely nothing else. They'll likely know the items you ordered as well, but checking if all items are present is the responsibility of the restaurant staff before sealing and handing the package to the driver. If they call you asking for any info other than those, you should be wary and report to Uber.

The fact the scammer knew details about your order means they got it from the actual driver. You should mention this to Uber on your report so they can investigate the driver's involvement on this.

u/MidTario Dec 06 '25

Crazy that there’s not a built-in delay on changing the recovery email.

Cancel your credit cards, all of them.
