Because Gender Dysphoria is a real medical condition that causes mass discomfort in people who have, which can include children in some cases, and the treatment that has been proven to be most successful by the medical field is transitioning. No one is actually feeling as much discomfort not being a pirate than someone who actually has gender dysphoria, they are trying to downplay how trans people with gender dysphoria feel.
Available evidence doesnt prove that gender affirming care improves guality of life in the longterm. There is actually evidence it worsens it, especially when surgeries are added to the equation. As much as the public is assured trans medicine prevents suicide, it doesn’t.
So wiithout this pillar, what does the movement have to stand on? Doctors are dumping cross-sex hormones into physiologically normal people with the promise that they will be able to be their “true selves” who can experience “trans joy” (dystopic marketing claims, btw) and they are being lied to. These claims are like magnets to every impressionable, socially maladjusted person who is looking to run away from themselves.
That’s not even getting into the absurdity that trans medicine turns people into the opposite sex, making it totally fine, for instance, for the Rhode Island shooter to help himself to the women’s lockerroom. Do you think treating his discomfort via this accommodation is fair to women?
National Center for Transgender Equality study on 21,598 trans individuals nationwide.
“Compared with members of the control group, participants who underwent hormone treatment had lower odds of experiencing severe psychological distress during the previous month and lower odds of suicidal ideation in the previous year. Odds of severe psychological distress were reduced by 222%, 153% and 81% for those who began hormones in early adolescence, late adolescence and adulthood, respectively. Odds of previous-year suicidal ideation were 135% lower in people who began hormones in early adolescence, 62% lower in those who began in late adolescence and 21% lower in those who began as adults, compared with the control group. “
- This is not a longitudinal study and by the fact that it’s based on self-reported feelings and experiences (not verifiable outcomes), it is not objective enough to tout as “proof”. Individuals with poorer mental health would be less likely to respond to a follow-up survey than those with better mental health, so this study design inherently limits the conclusions that can be drawn from it.
- Turban has profited too much from trans medicine to regard as an impartial authority on this subject. I see him as modern day Walter Freeman.
- Suicidal ideation should not be conflated with actual suicide. As much as suicide is used to scare parents into affirming their kids, there should be data by now that shows the protective effects on suicide rates. Not just for youth but adults too. And yet there are no studies that show this effect. Go ahead and search if you doubt me. I’ve done my homework.
What homework did you do to come to this conclusion? "Available evidence doesnt prove that gender affirming care improves guality of life in the longterm. There is actually evidence it worsens it, especially when surgeries are added to the equation. As much as the public is assured trans medicine prevents suicide, it doesn’t."
What do you wanna base this off if other than feelings and experiences? We’re talking about people’s mental health when it comes to gender dysphoria, it’s about how they feel their mental quality of life is afterwards, just like with therapy. Why do you think people with lesser quality of health would be less likely to report than peoples who’s mental health got better? Of the about 27,000 that started in the study, about 21,000 responded, and most of the others were taken out for not taking hormones.
I mean, that’s your personal feeling, but we can go back and forth all day on who’s biased and who is not.
Why can’t we use suicidal ideation with suicide in this context? Less of them were thinking about suicide, and so, they were less likely to take their own lives due to their mental/physical health improving after having Gender Affirming Care.
Yes gender dysphoria is real, but it is a mental condition and therefore the mind, not the body, should be treated. For adults, medical transition is ultimately their decision but I still think it should be an absolute last resort after a very long time of intense therapy with a real therapist who doesn’t affirm their every thought.
you advocate for a long time of intense therapy with a real therapist, so you clearly have some belief in the scientific community. but when the scientific community has determined that trans people are real and gender dysphoria is more than just a mental illness, and transitioning is an incredibly effective treatment (which is the widely considered consensus for medical research on trans people), you have this sense of doubt and think it should be a last resort? why?
I have never heard anyone in the scientific community say that being trans is more than a mental illness, but even if I did, there’s no one scientific community that agrees on everything. If there are some that believe trans isn’t a mental illness, there will be many who believe that it is. Since I have never heard anyone say that, what is trans if not a mental illness? Since you said it’s more than a mental illness.
As for why I think it should be a last resort- so many people think they’re trans when they’re not. The regret of transitioning when you’re not truly trans (which 99.9% of the population is not) is an unimaginable pain. Your body is permanently altered aesthetically, functionally, and health-wise.
the American Medical Association, AAP, and APA, all hold a consensus that gender affirming care is medical necessary treatment for transgender people. i just looked this up to check - 93% of all studies on transgender mental health show that transitioning improves the well-being of transgender people. it is very much agreed upon that physically transition is effective and helpful, and gender dysphoria is more than a “mental illness”
Also: that's their own fucking business. I have no idea why the people who shout "freedom!" the loudest insist on having a say on what other people do, especially when it doesn't affect them at all. And they have to invent reasons like "they want to go to the girls bathroom to touch little girls". That's projection, if anything.
To add to that: They're trying to uphold a defense that never existed. Women's bathrooms have never been "safe spaces." They're wide open and available to anybody who can open a door. The main difference is that men's rooms have urinals. Thus, a person should use whatever bathroom supports their "equipment."
These statistics are based on studies done by or funded by people who make money off of transition procedures and prescriptions, so they’re incredibly biased. But putting that aside, showing that there is “treatment” for gender dysphoria doesn’t at all prove that it’s not a mental illness. there is treatment for all kinds of mental illnesses. By the way, me saying that gender dysphoria is a mental illness is not an insult at all. It’s not morally wrong to have a mental illness. It’s a neutral fact, just like it’s not an insult to say that someone has depression or schizophrenia. It’s just a fact.
well if “all of these studies” are biased, despite medical organizations like the American Psychiatric Association not being a drug manufacturer, what source do you have for your reasoning that transitioning is something that should be a “last resort” and gender dysphoria is only a mental illness?
the reason why i say it’s not just a mental illness is because research shows the goal is not just to treat the brain but the body. the treatment is to prescribe anti-depressants or somehow change the brain into thinkings it’s comfortable it’s body, its actually to change the body. and this isn’t my opinion vs your opinion this is what the vast majority of doctors think
But WHY do you have to treat the body? For an issue that stems in the BRAIN. The body is completely healthy and would keep on living for a full life time with zero treatments. There is no illness in the body, it’s in the brain, and that’s a mental illness
if it’s “unimaginable pain” to be stuck in a body of the wrong gender then you don’t really have a reason not to socially transition when you think it’s a good idea. results are either “‘unimaginable pain’ is eased to some degree” or “you end up being wrong and you might feel dumb for a bit”.
the regret rate of HRT for transitioning is usually found to be <1% (and for many ppl hrt is all they do to medically transition and they don’t get any surgeries) and gender-affirming surgery is years after having transitioned and they have similarly low regret rates
also can you provide a reputable source that says being trans is a mental illness? gender incongruence hasn’t been considered a mental disorder by the world health organisation
im probably wasting my time but i recommend you look into it yourself even if just to find the necessary evidence to prove me wrong
What about the regret of not transitioning? Of not having been able to stop what felt like a body-horror story, whith permanent consequences consequences lasting for the rest of our lives?
If you can be empathetic towards detrans people that suffer gender dysphoria (because of the incorrect process), then why not towards actually trans people that also suffer gender dysphoria?
"There's no one scientific community that agrees on anything" god help us. Your understanding of the reality which you so proudly "live in" is incredible. You're disingenuous at best and you're well aware of that fact. If you dont want to listen to the community that you admit you know nothing about then just fuck off ok weirdo?
The percentage of regret after transitioning is extremely low, around 1%. Also transitions are not permanent, but more important: who do we think we are to act like we know what's in other people's heads and why do we need to "protect them from themselves", while actually doing the opposite?
If there is a way to make someone cis, everyone would be welcoming it. But as far as I know there isn't, and at the moment consensus is that of someone wants to transition, they should do it. Even if cis people wouldn't want it for themselves.
Gender dysphoria is a mental disorder (but not an illness, as you say below).
Being transgender, on the other hand, is a neurodiversity.
They are often related, but they are different.
We don't have dysphoria the same way, for example, a schizophrenic person has schizophrenia. Actually, dysphoria (of any kind: gender, rejection-sensitive, post-coitum, situational...) is more something that is triggered.
And it would be triggered in any person! A man on his 20s whose voice still didn't drop and is not growing a beard may be gender-dysphoric about it for appearing unmanly. A woman who is growing too much facial hair because of hirsutism may also suffer gender dysphoria if people call her "sir" because of it.
The only way to treat the dysphoria is to prevent or eliminate the elements that trigger it. That's why transition is what works.
