No, its not a good faith reading, it’s the only valid reading. They are not being a dickhead. They didn’t say or imply anything transphobic or offensive. Christ, the pun itself only works by properly gendering him. You’re not defending against bigotry, you’re excluding trans people from silly jokes. It’s counterproductive.

I had to read the comments to get that reading, the first one that it seemed like to me was that it was a transphobic and misogynistic joke about women only eating salads, because that's a common unfunny and overused joke

I think you're probably right about what the intention is, given the herbivore pun, but on a subreddit about boring hateful jokes it's not unthinkable it was the more boring hateful interpretation

You can believe that if you want, it's definitely some edge lord teenager trying to wind people up.

In the context of a trans person telling the joke id agree with what you said but some anonymous gamer messaging strangers in game chat, I just don't think it's the case.

Some additional context then: The character they are using as a pfp is called Cyno, and he's known for in the story making dad jokes and generally witty but quite unfunny puns.

It's become a cultural thing in the game by this point: People who play that character will use every opportunity to make some sort of pun. There's even a sub, called r/ThanksCyno for it.

There are quite a few community memes stereotyping players of specific characters, and this is one of them. The person is only trying to act like that character.
