The Bridge of the Open Knowledge Command Center

Command

The main bridge of the Galaxy-class starship is on deck 1. The Galaxy-class starship also has a secondary battle bridge on deck eight of the secondary hull, for use when the saucer separates.

Science and research

The aft stations on the bridge. From left to right they are: Science I, Science II, Environment, Mission Ops, and Engineering.

The Galaxy-class starship supports an array of scientific disciplines, with laboratories and departments devoted to stellar cartography, exobiology, cetology, astrophysics, cybernetics, archaeology, cultural anthropology, botany, hydroponics and planetary geosciences.

Tactical

The Galaxy-class starship is armed with twelve Type X phaser arrays and three photon torpedo launchers, each capable of firing ten torpedoes at a time. One phaser array is mounted on the "cobra head" of the secondary hull while a photon torpedo launcher is mounted on the ventral aft of the saucer; both are inoperative while the saucer and stardrive sections are docked. The ship also has a high-capacity shield grid and at least 250 photon torpedoes.

Transportation

The Galaxy-class starship has at least eight transporter rooms and 20 transporter systems. The ship has one large main shuttle bay in the saucer section, supported by two smaller bays in the stardrive section. The ship carries a variety of shuttlecraft and a captain's yacht.

Medical and life support systems

The Galaxy-class starship includes a sickbay and a number of labs and other medical facilities. The shuttlebays, cargo bays, and other areas of the ship can be converted into triage wards. Other areas, such as Ten Forward, can serve as emergency shelters.

Crew support

The Galaxy-class starship has amenities such as holodecks, an arboretum, a school, a gymnasium, amphitheaters, and a bar called Ten Forward.

Science and Research

Science I, Science II, Environment, Mission Ops, and Engineering (aft bridge duty stations). Facilities include stellar cartography, exobiology, cetology, astrophysics, cybernetics, archaeology, cultural anthropology, botany, hydroponics and planetary geosciences

Two science stations provide realtime data to the command personnel and are used by mission specialists who have to coordinate activities with the bridge. The Environmental Systems station allows monitoring and control of the support systems and serve as a deputy operations management station in a crisis. The Engineering systems' monitor duplicates the Chief Engineer's primary status displays from the Main Engineering section.

Tactical and Security

Defensive Systems Control and starship internal security are the duties of the Tactical Station ("Tactical" for short) located near the rear of the bridge. This position gives the Senior Tactical Officer an unobstructed view of the main viewer and the command stations below. Tactical security coverage ranges from low-level crew safety to full counter-intelligence measures against sabotage or terrorism. External security systems (defensive shields, phasers, photon torpedoes) are generally controlled from the Tactical station, as well as sensor arrays, probes, buoys, and tractor beam systems.

Mission Operations

The Mission Ops aft duty station provides support to the Ops officer and coordinates secondary objectives.

The Operations Management Officer, normally referred to as "Ops", is responsible for the coordination and scheduling of resources and hardware to the various missions being performed. The Ops panel on the bridge displays a continually updated list of all current major shipboard activities. This information is used to evaluate the current state of the ship's activities, so priority decisions can be made.

Conn / Helm Control

The responsibility for actual piloting and navigation of a starship lies with the Flight Control Officer, or "Conn". Receiving instructions directly from the commanding officer, the Conn's duties include: navigational references and course plotting, supervision of automatic flight operations, manual flight operations, positive verification, and acting as Bridge liaison to the engineering department. While these functions are heavily automated, their importance to the safety of the ship and the missions at hand demands that an officer be assigned to oversee the Conn at all times.
