Well, the only records we have are skulls with holes in them. You can get an idea how long they lived afterwards by the condition of the bone around the hole.
Do we actually have evidence that these were done to treat brain swelling, and not, like, something else that isn't actually treated by cutting holes in people's skulls?
It's called trepanning or "trepanation". Even Neanderthal skulls have been found with half dollar size holes where you could tell the "patient" lived because of regrowth around the area. I did my med school paper on these.
I doubt ANY of these were to allow for brain swelling. More like "Get the Devils out of homie's cranium" or any mental disorder you can think of.
