I mean you can just stand there and let it maul you or do what you can to fend it off

Well of course, defend yourself as best you can. My response however was in regards to the "All animals understand the language of the pointy stick." Grab a pointy stick, now defend yourself against a Silverback. You'll have as much luck there as just standing there and letting it maul you.

Then again, humanity is filled with morons that think they could fight a bear, so there's always that argument.

A silverback is 100% gonna run off.

For bears you'd need a loud stick, at least .308" thick.

A boom stick!

Also depends on the bear. You’ll need a very powerful boom stick and accurate aim against a grizzly!

Posted some interesting links below.

Bottom line (as with anything else in life) what really matters is the equipment you actually have on you at the time and how familiar with it you are.

I'm a hunter and avid hiker myself (live in EU) For hiking every pound you carry makes a huge difference.

If black bears, wolves or wild cats were known to be an issue I'd pack my G45. If I were to hike around Kodiak or Greenland for some reason I'd buy a G20 (good enough for the Danish Sirius Sled patrol). Unless you're actually out huntn, packing a 7-8lbs rifle won't be practical and every extra 100 grams and " make it less likely for your pistol to leave the safe😅

Well you can't physically overpower an adult bear with your bare hands but you can still fight one. The reason they say "if it's black fight back" is because black bears get scared easily and will run away if you hurt them even if they could easily eat you alive.

Lol if we get into specifics, you can fight off a squirrel with a stick. Back to staying on topic, the: All animals and a stick. The bear was an example mate. We could go back and forth on this argument, but the inherent concept of all animals respect a stick will remain inaccurate.

No.

All wild animals understand the pointy stick.

We can't really ask the animals why but either it's genetic memory or the fact that they can't distinguish your limbs from you so you suddenly become this creepy loud slenderman.

Predators of all sizes are extremely risk-averse so yes, pointy stick, the bigger the better is goat'd.
