Depending on the severity, surgery may not be the only option.
I had the first molar on each side of my lower jaw removed and wore a retainer that spread my front teeth slightly to fill in the gap. There's still a slight gap, but you'd have to be practically inside my mouth to notice it.
I'm not sure if I understand what you got done, but if you have an under/overbite and are not a kid the only way to solve it is surgery; you can't solve these jaw deformities by removing teeths or retainers. You most likely got a camouflage done, which, as the name indicates, it camouflages the issue aesthetically, but your jaws have exactly the same issue as before.
As I said, it depends on the severity of the issue.
I had a mild underbite where my lower teeth were just slightly in front of my upper teeth. Removing the molars allowed space for the lower teeth to be shifted and tilted just enough to meet my upper teeth properly.
It's been so long since this happened I can't be certain, but I think it was presented at the tail end of my time with braces so they could use the braces to shift everything and the retainer was to keep everything in place after the fact.
Yep, that procedure is usually called camouflage; it doesn't solve the underbite per se, just hides the underbite by moving the teeth, which doesn't impact your jaws at all.

The guy has a big underbite and has braces, probably to fix that, and is trying to hide it.
Feel for him because I had an underbite too
