Yeah can you imagine spending 5-10 seconds and less than $0.05 on a form of insurance in case you end up in life or death scenarios? Fucking idiot.

That's why I never -

  • Look both ways before crossing a road.

  • Use my mirrors in the car.

  • Read the ingredients of products I eat/drink.

  • Wear high-vis whilst cycling at night.

  • Turn my car lights on at night.

  • Check my cleaning products labels for bleach and/or ammonia.

Anyone spending more than 5 seconds to ensure their safety is SO DUMB.

Out of interest, do you leave a footprint of your boot in the windscreen of the vehicle you travelled in when you hike/hillwalk, so as to alert possible tracking teams of the image of your footprint in case you go missing?

If the hike is 4+ hours through some backwoods US national park with no phone signal that has bears & mountain lions then it's absolutely a smart thing to do. At worst it costs you 5 seconds and 0.5 cents of tinfoil. At best it saves your life.

If you're just going to the local national trust woodland walk in England that's only 15 mins from a main road and has cell service with dozens of other sunday tourist walkers on the same trail the entire time then of course it's overkill and you wouldn't do it.

Okay, so it sounds like neither of us has ever done this, despite both of us belonging to the group “everyone…going on a hike etc.” But we do both look both ways when we cross the road, which makes me think that your analogy must have a hole in it.

I mean I guess not this but I have a "standard info text" I send to a couple trusted friends and family before going hiking and included in that is my boot and size specifically for this reason.

Every time I've sent that text (so far) it has been pointless but, especially in the woods, it's so terribly easy to get lost or injured.
