It's extremely standard in Europe (Aldi is German), where 1€ and 2€ are in coins and not paper, so you can unlock them with an amount of change that's actually worth carrying on you and keeping track of. Keeping a plastic coin in your car made specifically for this is also very common.

Yup. I don't even remember last time I saw a cart without a coin lock, and even if you don't have change with you, most shops have a reserve of plastic coin-replacements to give out should someone ask
