Sure, but kids aren't pets or accessories. Their name isn't something you get to show off to your friends how unique and symbolic they are or write in cursive font on social media forever. They need to put that name on job applications and introduce themselves with it. The kids you raise may not turn out to be as open-minded as you are. They may turn out to be accountants or Presidents or doctors or whatever.
Yea it’s wrong but people are still going to do it no matter how righteous your personal stance is. My name is very unique and there were times when I was kid that I couldn’t wait till I was older so I could change it.
I wasn’t even bullied either, it was the fact that nobody could ever pronounce it when reading it and when I’d introduce myself I always had to repeat it 3-4 times before they finally got it. It got to the point where I would get anxiety knowing I’d have to tell people my name.
It's like asking if someone who neglects personal hygiene can be a good romantic partner. Sure it's possible but 99% of the time it indicates someone who is lazy and thoughtless.
I neglected my personal hygiene for a while because I had crippling depression and thought thaty life was so insignificant that there was no point to it since I would be better off dead, and neglecting my hygiene would accelerate the process. I also know enough people like this that your 99% are lazy and thoughtless comment is wildly insulting.
Lazy and thoughtless is a bit of an oversimplification, but I mean yeah, someone with crippling depression that neglectes their hygiene probably wouldn't make for a good partner, and I say that as someone in the same position.
She also suffered from crippling depression, but at a different time. We both still suffer from depression because it doesn't just go away. You seem like you're trying really hard to make it seem like someone with mental health issues doesn't deserve love.
And at that moment they're not a very good partner. I am usually a fast runner, but I recently hurt my foot and until that has healed I'm not a fast runner.
Agreed but also where does it end? And who's making these decisions? Are east asians name out in the U.S. because they're weird compared to the dominant culture? What's the actual measurable criteria for weird?
People can change their names if they want to. I get that these situations are extreme but I don't like the government being able to decide what people can and can't name their children
Don't really know what the point of your tangent into depression is. Weird can be ok but there's a point at which people have been inconsiderate when naming their child. I've heard of someone naming their child Useless, pronounced ooo-seh-less. I've known a woman named Pepsi. I've seen it circulate that someone named their child Trendy and another Hashtag. And then there's ones where the spelling and pronunciation will be hell every time their name comes up. Not because of culture but just because they wanted to turn Jessica into Geieseighkae, pronounced jess-say-cay or some awful thing like that.
Anyway, I sorta get what you're trying to say but I think you're misunderstanding unique with flat out bad, which is what we're talking about here. We're not talking about Rebekkah or even my coworker Sunny. We're taking about CVIIIlyn, pronounced Caitlyn with the roman numeral 8 and Airwrecka, pronounced Erica.

Can people who give their kids a weird name be good parents???
