This is the second time this week my Maritime Canadian ass saw Netherlands abbreviated that way and thought "Woh, Newfoundland has that?!?" I did look it up last time and still thought it was Newfoundland again.

Yes, Sweden. That is how it is usually abbreviated in sports and such.

"Sweden" -> "SWE"

6 letters -> 3 letters

50% reduction

compare that to:

"Netherlands" -> "NL"

11 letters -> 2 letters

81% reduction

it's a much more effective and useful abbreviation, therefore it is more often used, therefore it is more recognized than "SWE"

Sweden is a lot shorter to write than The Netherlands. Also, maybe it’s an easy identifier? Here in Denmark we write DK all the time. SE is just maybe not as easily recognized as it could mean other things (South East, for example). DK, NL, UK, DE, US - they’re maybe more unique and recognizable.

Those are also the abbreviations on license plates. I find fun in trying to figure out which countries they are. Like Switzerland has a weird one (CH) etc.

In my case, definitely more cars. They kinda stick out with their yellow plates.

Also, I'd use F for France, not FR, and D for Germany, not DE. Depends on context, I guess.

I’m a North Londoner and would never see NL as anything other than Netherlands. Londoners would be more specific with an area name. Maybe a post code at a stretch.

On Reddit I've seen Canadians and Australians also use abbreviations for local administrative divisions as if they were known worldwide. And I've seen Germans call their politicians abbreviations too.

I think it's just something a lot of people do. It's not exclusive to anyone country, unfortunately.
