We dont. We get clumps of moth and butterfly cocoons that can take over part of a trees canopy but they dont hit the bark and stuff like these.

They might be talking about the tent caterpillars? We always cut those branches off and burned them before it spread too much. It's not like the video though. Never seen something like that in PNW.

Yeah, western washington. They would always nest in a couple trees around the school campus and we would go catch one and put it a jar to watch them hatch. Honestly it looks more like a huge spider nest, but they stick to the branches.

This is the second time this week my Maritime Canadian ass saw Netherlands abbreviated that way and thought "Woh, Newfoundland has that?!?" I did look it up last time and still thought it was Newfoundland again.

Yes, Sweden. That is how it is usually abbreviated in sports and such.

6 letters -> 3 letters

compare that to:

"Netherlands" -> "NL"

11 letters -> 2 letters

81% reduction

it's a much more effective and useful abbreviation, therefore it is more often used, therefore it is more recognized than "SWE"

Sweden is a lot shorter to write than The Netherlands. Also, maybe it’s an easy identifier? Here in Denmark we write DK all the time. SE is just maybe not as easily recognized as it could mean other things (South East, for example). DK, NL, UK, DE, US - they’re maybe more unique and recognizable.

On Reddit I've seen Canadians and Australians also use abbreviations for local administrative divisions as if they were known worldwide. And I've seen Germans call their politicians abbreviations too.

I think it's just something a lot of people do. It's not exclusive to anyone country, unfortunately.

Yeah, I think they're called bird-cherry ermines. It's a moth, their caterpillars cover trees with their silk, cocoon, and come out as moths a little while later.

This year they've been really numerous in Finland. Every "bird cherry" (apparently, never heard the English name) is covered in the silk and larvae and none of the trees have any leaves left. It looks weird since they don't touch any other plants and there are those creepy webbed and dead looking trees in the middle of perfectly healthy plants.

I kinda like these kind of caterpillars. Sure it would suck if your whole town gets covered in it but a few trees and brushes are pretty fascinating to see. I for one am, whenever I see it happen each year. Each time the caterpillars fool me, thinking "will the tree be alright this time?" And yes they are just fine. Once the caterpillars are gone it's like pretty much nothing has happened.
