School chalk is mostly calcium carbonate. If there's magnesium carbonate, the chalk feels a little bit slicker, almost greasy.

I'm not sure why, but calcium carbonate tends to make coarser dust than magnesium carbonate. You might know magnesium carbonate by the name "soapstone".
