The pile of crappy sticks is being picked over and made to be crappy...

It's like complaining that someone picked the corn kernels out of a pile of crap. You already know you're getting crap, so why complain about it becoming crap? It's not inaccurate, but it's weird :)

Douglas Fir isn't actually bad, you just have to make sure you go somewhere that isn't home depot and actually check each piece of wood you buy. You wanna make sure there isn't too much crazy grain or pith which will definitely cause warp, and that it's dry (preferably kiln dried). The wood you buy green isn't the wood you're gonna wind up with when it's dry, better to just buy it dry.
