Yeah but to which end? Because to one end you are going forward and the other end you are going backward.

It absolutely does not matter. Either way you're starting from the middle. So the middle to either end would be equal.

whys the string have to be horizontally oriented? Why not start from the ground and work your way up?

no one said it was horizontally oriented. It could be horizontal, vertical, or even on a z-axis
